"Careers in cybersecurity are key to helping avert internal and external threats, as well as helping companies recover after an attack occurs."

How I put change in motion

I am a Strategy and Risk Consultant, working with clients in the health and public service industries to secure their data. We offer security advisory services, helping organizations understand their current environment and strategic threats while developing roadmaps to close gaps they may have. My role is dynamic, depending on the project or client I work with. I love that every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

As the rate of technological adoption continues to increase, technologies can have unknown vulnerabilities that were not identified during development. These vulnerabilities can be exploited to disrupt a company’s day-to-day operations, causing financial and reputational damage. Careers in cybersecurity are in demand, as people with these skills are key to helping avert internal and external threats and helping companies recover after an attack occurs.

I recently worked on an international project based in the UAE, planning to migrate the client’s infrastructure to the cloud over the course of six months. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the client requested an earlier rollout of remote working tools that would support their 50,000+ employees. The newly agreed timeframe was two weeks and every work stream collaborated, so it was all hands on deck. Not only did we successfully implement the required tools, but we also managed to deliver condensed training sessions on installation and how to use the tools effectively.

I joined the project as a Security Analyst and when the scope of the project changed, I proactively offered to support in any way that was needed. My role ended up being quite versatile, and I went from a role in security to change management overnight.

A day in my life

My typical day varies, depending on the project I’m working on. Currently, my day consists of tasks such as:

  • Progressing Accenture-client deliverables.
  • Preparing and collating materials from various parties for key stakeholder forums.
  • Attending daily touch points with the client and project team to discuss progress.
  • Supporting the next phase of a project, specifically defining next steps and the future scope.
  • Participating in Inclusion and Diversity activities with the Accenture U.K.I Muslim Interest Group and the Security African Caribbean Network.

Encouraging black female talent to pursue technology careers is a passion of mine. I serve as the Marketing and Engagement Coordinator for the nonprofit Black Tech Queens. This passion inspires my work, as I actively take every opportunity to participate in recruitment events and panels. As a mixed-race, Jamaican Indian and Black Muslim female, I can say that Accenture is truly a diverse place to work.

During my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I recently started practicing mixed martial arts (MMA), which has been challenging but fun so far! I also love to cook, especially my favorite dish: a five-cheese lasagna.

My advice

It’s vital to stay up to date on the cybersecurity landscape. Be open to gaining experience in a variety of security domains, as it will help you decide what to specialize in later in your career. A background in computer science is not always necessary; my degree was in forensic science.

It’s never too early to build your network. Platforms such as LinkedIn enable us to easily access global security professionals. I recommend connecting with someone in a position you aspire to be in and be specific in what you would like to learn from them.
