Accenture Labs is the applied R&D arm of Accenture. We are technologists, inventors, and visionaries that specialize in bridging the enterprise gap between the latest technologies and the needs of G2000 companies. With close ties to startups, universities, and enterprise teams, our work involves identifying the latest technology trends and deriving real value that goes beyond buzzwords. We actively create a proof of concepts showing how to apply to improve a new technology, file patents, publish papers to conferences, and work on first of its kind deployments with clients.

Researchers in Accenture Labs are called upon to: 

·       Track a broad range of emerging technologies and become a deep expert in some of these. 

·       Dive deeply into application areas that are relevant to Accenture and our clients, to understand where the most critical challenges, and most promising opportunities lie.

·       Envision, prototype, and communicate the value of new solutions to these challenges by learning and applying technical skills. 

·       Explore and define new projects within the research agenda. 

·       Build on ideas provided by stakeholders and leaders to produce high quality deliverables. 

·       Execute projects through some combination of prototype development, empirical research and thought leadership.

Within Labs, the Future Technologies R&D group focuses on emerging technologies that combine physical sciences with computation, such as smart materials and neuromorphic computing, and emerging energy solutions. This team works closely with academic collaborators and industry stakeholders and integrates this approach into every one of our projects. We seek an experienced, well-rounded, interdisciplinary researcher to help lead this expansion effort and serve as the local lead in San Francisco. This team lead will be responsible for mentoring and guiding a small team of scientists, engineers, and researchers, building relationships with external and internal partners and stakeholders, and helping the team position their research to maximize their impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and executing R&D Agenda through a portfolio of projects with planned business impact​.

  • Mobilizing the R&D advancement in the emerging technologies community through deep technical expertise.

  • Building and managing collaborations with universities, non-profits and other industry research labs. 

  • Serving as an industry expert when establishing relationships or projects with Accenture client teams. 

  • Contributing to both internal and external thought leadership, both more and less formal, targeted for various audiences.

  • Actively contributing to the technology community and establishing external reputation as expert.

  • Serving as reviewer, technical program community, and/or panelist in conferences and workshops.

  • Leading the team to publish, participate, and serve in the research community through conferences, consortiums, workshops, etc. 

  • Supervising and mentoring junior researchers and research engineers to successfully complete their responsibilities and assist with career progression

Here's what you need:

  • PhD or M.S. in an area relevant to emerging technologies including but not limited to sustainable energy, biotechnology, intelligent edge computing, neuromorphic computing, human-computer interaction or materials science and engineering.

  • Demonstrated technical excellence and 6+ years of experience working with emerging technologies.

  • 2+ years of management experience growing and leading a small team.

Bonus Points if:

  • Experience with project management, and planning and execution of research projects.

  • Record of communicating the impact of your research at conferences or in peer-reviewed publications. 

  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to distill and map high level requirements to concrete technical features

  • Proven ability to help define and execute against a project plan. 

  • Proven ability to collaborate and work in a team-oriented environment. 

  • Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment. 

  • Professional work experience with any of the following:  neuromorphic computing, smart materials, design of hybrid living materials, biodesign, bioHCI, HCI, energy harvesting & storage for autonomous devices.

  • Demonstrated ability to promote your research through excellence in teaching, STEM outreach, science twitter, web publications, etc. 

  • Ability to analyze trends in emerging technology and how they impact client industries.

  • Strong knowledge of the energy or biotechnology vendor landscape across multiple industries

  • Experience coordinating and driving work across large, distributed organizations

  • Experience creating and driving strategic vendor relationships

  • Proven inventor with experience filing patents to protect intellectual property

  • Ability to travel based on project needs (up to 25%).
