Group Design Director @ Fjord

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Group Design Director is expected to help shape the discourse around design, engage with the community at a local level and help designers become better practitioners through career and skill development. Given the demanding growth goals of the organization, he/she is also expected to be well connected in the market, and attract the best and brightest design talent within the region.
  • He/she is also responsible for collaborating and actively sharing knowledge with the other offices’ design leaders. The community of Group Design Directors meets regularly with our CEO, who personally oversees thought leadership activities of this group. The mission for design leaders, as defined by the CEO is “Impact Through Design,” based on three pillars: Building the team of the future; Leading the world by design; and Spreading the Fjord Spirit.
  • We expect the successful candidates to have 15+ years experience of delivering design solutions for various clients across multiple platforms and mediums.
  • The ideal candidate will thrive working in a fast paced, collaborative, team environment.
  • The Group Design Director is responsible for building, managing and continuously evolving the studio’s design team — the role’s mission statement is to “Build a Legendary Design Practice”.
  • This includes but is not limited to:
  • Inspiring great creativity, design and quality
  • Hiring and shaping a world-class design practice and team
  • Shaping and managing skills and career development for the design team
  • Creating a winning, talent-attracting, and productive design culture in the office, by leading by example and through proven and consistent management practices
  • Evolving and guiding usage of the best design tools and processes
  • Partnering with the Group Director to strengthen Fjord’s presence in this market and aggressively grow reputation and business
  • Working closely with finance, resource management and program management to deliver the right work to our clients

 

 

Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years experience in leadership roles, with proven team management and active mentorship abilities
  • Unconventional and brilliant thinking
  • Clear, consistent, and transparent communications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven experience designing applications and services that balance user needs, commercial interests, and technological constraints
  • Experience designing for cross-platform services
  • Hands-on experience driving pitches to success
  • Willingness to travel

 

Other Requirements:

  • Be a storyteller -- A critical element of all roles is to deliver insights about people and behavior, verbally and visually, in a way that generates empathy, emotion, and engagement from the client and design team.
  • Drive a strategic perspective on the variety of work that we do -- Many of our projects involve strategic thinking based upon the insights gathered from the field. Thus, business, brand, and/or strategic experience are desirable.
  • Be enthusiastic, highly creative, with a professional, positive ‘can do’ attitude and an excellent team player
  • Engender honesty and trust New business and external client projects (approx. 50%)
  • Participate in or lead key client projects where creative ideation and problem solving is required. This is typically during the ‘Concepting’ stage of a project, but could also extend to ‘Context’ and ‘Design’ phases.
  • Help introduce new angles and ideas to the project team and the client, and leverage learning and ideas from previous projects and pitches into new scenarios
  • Partner with business development to pursue new business leads and convert client briefs
  • Lead the creative side of pitches and support the business development team with creative input, client meetings, presentations and proposal creation
  • Ensure solutions are scalable and applicable to other studios, clients and/or sectors; and knowledge and best practices are shared across projects and teams
  • Collaborate with leadership to set the standard for client focused working practices
  • Actively develop, nurture and maintain client relationships Internal tasks (approx. 50%)
