I joined Accenture as a graduate in 2015. I did my Bachelors in India and then worked with another organisation there for just over a year before moving to London. If I’m honest, I would say that initially I found the transition to the UK a bit difficult - working in India is so different to here, where for me there was a lot of new processes to understand. But fortunately, I got the right guidance from people on my project team and, my senior managers were so helpful and supportive in enabling me to get to grips with everything and ensuring I was ticking all the right boxes.
I’m now a Technical Delivery Specialist and I’ve worked in Customer Experience for the last three and a half years. I’ve been helping a client with their Content Management Systems across multiple websites, so they understand different components and features they can put together to build great interfaces for their customers.
I’ve literally just moved off this client and my new project is something completely different but very exciting. I’m now a Scrum Master/Release Lead on a project with very high visibility across Accenture. There are going to be some tight timelines and tough client expectations, but these are challenges that I’m looking forward to! The team is great too and have been very supportive in onboarding me so I can hit the ground running.
I don’t think it’s ideal to keep your focus in one area and at Accenture you have every opportunity to explore a diversity of projects and technologies and keep learning new skills. In fact, I’ve just completed training on the technology AWS (Amazon Web Services) and my next step is to go for certification.
As I said, it did take me time to settle here and I didn’t get my first promotion until 2017 but have been promoted twice more since then. To succeed here, I’ve learnt that it’s very important to keep a track of what you are doing and show people the benefits you’re providing not only for the clients but also for the company. There’s a lot of side-of-desk opportunities you can get involved with and when I was a graduate Analyst, I did Corporate Citizenship alongside my day job. It’s being able to demonstrate a willingness to contribute that’s key, whether that’s in terms of financial revenue, customer experience, side-of-desk activities or, if you have specialist skills on a certain technology, sharing that knowledge. For example, I have trained over 100 people client-side and did a lot travelling throughout the UK just to provide workshops.
I think it’s very important to understand what excites you, but you’ll never know what is going to make you feel accomplished until you’ve tried out all the options available to you. If you have an open mind, are willing to try out new roles and take on new challenges, you’ll soon understand your strengths and reach your full potential. Best of all, Accenture will help you achieve that.
