"I approach my job and contributions to the company by converting my interests into the things I do every day."

Green coding as a way of work and life

Agris working in IT industry already around 15 years, last 7 years at Accenture. Before he was system administrator in hometown Ventspils, and doing some lectures for school children at planetarium. By education he is Master in computer science.

Started work at Accenture as intern after Bootcamp training he was working on Communication media projects, while for a while also worked with satellite image processing in Ventspils University.

How to approach our clients in sustainability manner? This what he was thinking every time, and decided to organize workshop for developers and discuss how to create a “Green coding”. It took him around 3 months to create guidelines and update process of coding. In accordance with “Value 360 meter” – the new way to move closer to understanding the client and giving feedback on what is the actual results being produced in the project.

A day in my life

It is the practices of designing and writing software with the awareness for how it is impacting the environment via energy use. Grey software is when we do not consider the sustainability aspect of software and is the baseline to compare against. Green software usually starts as grey and with refactoring, good planning and architecture optimizes its performance and reduces the energy consumption of the system, becoming green.

In their project they defined the following core principles (M4R) when thinking about sustainable software:

  • Monitor what and how much is spent and what is gained.
  • Refuse what will not give any value to the system. If they are just building something for having it, but nobody uses it – then it should be refused.
  • Reduce what will not be used, optimize what is actually needed.
  • Reuse software – what requires a new calculation, new field etc. - or can it be optimized and received in any existing information?
  • Reform what is not needed, can be removed, or refactored to be useful. Keep it lean.

“I approach my job and contributions to the company by converting my interests into the things I do every day. I like to move from A to B by driving bike or walking, to plant trees and berries in my garden, to be sustainable in all lifestyle things.” – said Agris.
