I’m a Korean American. My parents moved to America in the 70’s. And I was born and raised in California, where there’s so much diversity and so many immigrant communities. My father is a pastor at a Korean church, so growing up I had this sort of extended Korean family who were also going through or had gone through that process of navigating their Korean American identity.
It was pretty special, growing up in that community. It was kind of like having lots of older siblings, parents and grandparents, all willing to help you and guide you and support you.
It meant I grew up very connected to both of my cultures. I could be proud of my heritage, as well as being American. And that I could learn to really know myself, so I was always comfortable to be myself.
