Responsibility for environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters starts at the top—with our Board and our Chair and CEO—and cascades throughout the business, including our use of performance objectives relating to being a responsible company. At the Board level, the Nominating, Governance & Sustainability Committee oversees Accenture’s overall ESG performance, disclosure, strategies, goals and objectives while monitoring evolving ESG risks and opportunities. In addition, the Compensation, Culture & People Committee of our Board oversees Accenture’s strategies and policies related to our people, including matters such as overall well-being, pay equity, inclusion and diversity, leadership succession and culture. We have a clear governance structure to help us achieve our goals and to reflect these objectives throughout the organization while guiding our strategic approach.

Our Global Management Committee (GMC) members sponsor our responsible company strategies. These senior leaders, spanning multiple corporate functions and geographies, engage on these topics and are responsible for making final decisions on strategies, goals and policies recommended by various management groups. Together, they make strategic recommendations and decisions on our integrated responsible business and ESG initiatives, including sponsorship of our non-financial goals.

We continue to shape our leadership structure so it reflects our values of governance throughout the business. Effective December 2020, Peter Lacy was appointed to the newly created role of Chief Responsibility Officer and Global Sustainability Services Lead, and also joined the Global Management Committee, taking the first senior leadership position at Accenture with a primary focus on both client and corporate sustainability. Peter’s work spans ESG issues as they relate to our business, clients and ecosystem partners—including our actions to help achieve the United Nations Global Compact’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The Corporate Citizenship Council [PDF], a group of senior executives from multiple disciplines and geographies, implements those policies and supporting programs—assessing strategy, guiding overall programming activity and approving major initiatives. Each of our 15 market units has a council member responsible for his or her implementation of our corporate citizenship priorities within that geography.

In fiscal 2021, we instituted a newly structured Environmental Sustainability Executive Committee accountable for approving strategic global decisions aligned to Accenture’s corporate environmental sustainability commitments and growth objectives. This builds on the 2008 to 2020 work of the Environment Steering Group, comprised of leaders from across Accenture, who determined our processes for providing guidance around carbon-emissions disclosure.

In the past year, we also launched our new Environmental Steering Committee and Environmental Operating Committee. These groups meet regularly to monitor our environmental performance and identify improvement areas.
