Principal Product Engineer – Corrections & Justice Public Sector Platform
We are seeking a Principal Product Engineer with deep microservices architecture experience, high AI literacy, and a strong product-led background to lead the technical execution, platform architecture, and product delivery of a bespoke platform for the corrections and prison management domain.
Your primary focus is high-leverage technical and product leadership. While remaining active in technology, you will focus on defining system architecture, designing critical core services and AI integrations, and shaping product strategy alongside senior stakeholders. You will translate complex public sector workflows such as case management, rehabilitation tracking, and facility operations into intuitive, scalable, and intelligent software platforms.
What We Are Looking For
Core Experience
- 8-10+ years of software engineering and technical product delivery experience, with a track record of leading distributed microservices platforms and complex user-facing transactional applications.
- Direct Expertise in Service Decomposition: Direct experience architecting or owning service decomposition decisions — you have an opinion on domain-driven design, API gateway strategy, and event streaming, and you can defend it.
- Bespoke System Delivery: Proven track record of architecting custom-engineered platforms (not just configuring off-the-shelf SaaS) within complex, highly regulated organisational environments.
- Cross-Functional Team Management: Proven ability to manage multi-team delivery across engineering, UX, data, and integration workstreams.
Strategic & Communication Credibility: Fluent in shifting between technical architecture deep dives with engineering teams and strategic roadmap briefings with senior government officials and non-technical operational leaders.
Industry Background — Strongly Preferred
Candidates from the following backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply:
- Product Companies at Scale: FAANG, growth-stage tech, or platform businesses where microservices architecture, rapid delivery cycles, user-centricity, and product telemetry were a lived reality, not an aspiration.
- Banking & Financial Services: Core banking modernization, payments infrastructure, or regulatory technology platforms with strong API, service governance, and high-security requirements.
- Social Services & Benefits Administration: Case management systems, beneficiary lifecycle platforms, or government service delivery applications.
- Government & Public Sector: Previous engagement with public sector delivery constraints, IM8, PSG, or equivalent governance, security-by-design, and data sovereignty frameworks.
- Healthcare or Justice-Adjacent Industries: Corrections, rehabilitation, mental health platforms, or any domain with complex case-based workflows and strictly regulated data.
Technical Fluency
- Microservices & System Architecture: Deep technical fluency in event-driven systems, REST/GraphQL API design, container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker), message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and microservice governance.
- Full-Stack & UX Engineering Craft: Deep understanding of modern web architectures (React, Next.js, TypeScript, state management) and how frontend interfaces interact with backend microservices, caching layers, and database subledgers.
- Pragmatic Prototyping & Scoping: Ability to build quick proof-of-concept code spikes to test technical feasibility, validate AI/UX flows with end-users, and establish implementation patterns for the wider team.
- Product Telemetry & Analytics: Practical fluency in embedding client- and server-side observability, product analytics, error, and custom event logging to monitor feature adoption and task completion rates.
- Cloud-Native, DevSecOps & Security: Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and security-by-design in government or regulated contexts.
- Practical AI Literacy & Tooling Experience: Hands-on experience leveraging modern AI developer tools (e.g., Cursor, Copilot, or AI-assisted IDEs) to accelerate technical discovery, alongside practical experience integrating standard LLM APIs/services into web applications (e.g., search indexing, automated summarization, or operational assistance tools).
Personal Qualities
- Outcome-oriented and comfortable with ambiguity
- Credible with both engineers and senior officials; you can shift register fluently between architecture reviews and ministerial briefings.
- Disciplined about trade-offs: you know when to hold the line on architectural integrity and when to ship.
- Curious about complex human systems — the corrections domain involves layered operational, ethical, and policy dimensions that reward genuine intellectual engagement.
Nice to Have
- Experience with rehabilitation, reintegration, or corrections-specific platforms (case officer tools, risk assessment systems, supervision management).
- Prior consulting or advisory delivery experience across multiple clients or sectors.
- Certifications in SAFe, CSPO, or equivalent scaled agile frameworks.
Exposure to AI/ML integration in operational platforms.
