What would you do? We are looking for a mid-level Cost Estimator to support planning and delivery of utility infrastructure projects, especially those required for integrating renewable energy resources into the grid. This role focuses on preparing accurate cost estimates, analyzing project needs, and supporting budgeting for transmission, distribution, and substation upgrade programs.
What are we looking for? • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field. • Experience in cost estimating for utilities, EPC, or infrastructure projects. • Strong understanding of T&D systems, substations, and renewable interconnection requirements. • Proficiency with estimating software (P6, SAP, Excel-based models, etc.). • Knowledge of solar/wind/storage technologies and grid-tie infrastructure. • Experience with bid evaluations and contractor negotiations. • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to present cost findings clearly.
Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Review project scope and engineering inputs • Study project documents such as single-line diagrams, layout drawings, BOQs, and technical specifications. • Identify all required components—transformers, breakers, conductors, poles, protection systems, communications, civil works, etc. • Clarify assumptions by coordinating with engineering and planning teams. 2. Prepare detailed cost estimates • Create material, labor, and equipment cost breakdowns for T&D lines, substations, renewable interconnection points, or grid expansion. • Use cost databases, vendor pricing, past project references, and standard estimating guidelines. • Develop estimates across the lifecycle: conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design stages. 3. Analyze vendor and contractor pricing • Obtain quotes for major equipment (e.g., transformers, switchgear, protection panels). • Compare vendor bids, evaluate variances, and incorporate realistic costing. • Track market trends (steel, copper, cabling, construction labor rates) to adjust cost assumptions. 4. Support budgeting and financial planning • Build cost models for capital project approval and long-term investment planning. • Identify the largest cost drivers and forecast potential material escalation. • Provide cost input for management reviews, funding requests, and project prioritization. 5. Evaluate risks and uncertainties • Identify potential cost risks (e.g., site conditions, permitting delays, supply-chain constraints). • Apply contingencies and risk-based adjustments as per utility standards. • Participate in risk workshops or project review meetings. 6. Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams • Work closely with engineers, planners, schedulers, procurement, and project managers. • Validate assumptions such as construction sequencing, outage windows, and resource needs. • Support negotiations with contractors by providing cost baselines and comparisons. 7. Maintain estimating tools and cost databases • Update internal cost libraries with recent material pricing and vendor data. • Standardize templates for repeatable estimation processes. • Track actual project costs and reconcile them against estimates for continuous improvement.
