"If the person is interested in technology, it’s a plus but a business analyst needs rather logical thinking, creativity and thinking outside the box."

What I do

I work in Accenture mainly as a business analyst but also as a team leader and project manager. It means everyday contact directly with the client or colleagues in Slovakia and abroad with who we work on software solutions for customers tailored to their needs and covering all the existing processes in the given company and field.

Disregard of the nature of business, each company has certain internal working procedures in place they have been following for years. We need to grasp those procedures before the new software implementation in their everyday work, and design the entire solution in such a manner that the transition to the new system is smooth for end users and efficient for the company’s management.

A day in my life

Each day in Accenture is different for me and this is one of the things I like about this job because I don’t fall into a routine. As a team leader I am in charge of my team’s tasks and responsible for quality and timely outputs of the team effort. We often discuss the best and most efficient possibilities of requirements handling. I travel quite often and participate in client workshops. I work with Microsoft technology, in particular with customer relationship management system Dynamics 365.

In one of my recent projects I had an opportunity to try a combination of three roles at once: I was a business analyst, team leader of a 6-member team of programmers and a partial project manager. It was an interesting experience in particular because it was for a local client, therefore the entire solution including the solution management was delivered exclusively by our delivery center. We were in charge also of areas like contracts and billing that are usually handled by our colleagues in the client’s country since a majority of our projects is destined for foreign customers.

My advice

My advice is don’t be afraid. Many people believe that an IT job means only programming and technical tasks which is not true. If the person is interested in technology, it’s a plus but a business analyst needs rather logical thinking, creativity and thinking outside the box. When I interview the candidates, I am more interested in their overall attitude and approach to problems solving and their communication and self-presentation skills than in their technical skills and experience (that are also important of course).
