Important Information
Security Clearance Requirement
Due to the nature of the work you'll be supporting, this role requires eligibility for Security Clearance. As part of the clearance process, applicants must be able to provide a minimum of five years' UK address history at the time of application.
Hybrid Working
This role is based at our Newcastle office in Cobalt Business Park and requires a minimum of three days per week on-site.

About the Role
We're looking for a talented Java Developer to join our Advanced Technology Centre in Newcastle.
You'll play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering enterprise-scale applications for clients across the public and private sectors. Working within Agile delivery teams, you'll help build modern, scalable solutions using Java and Spring Boot while collaborating with experienced engineers, architects, and technical specialists.

What You'll Be Doing
As a Java Developer, you will:
- Develop and maintain Java Spring Boot microservices as part of a collaborative engineering team.
- Build scalable, reliable, and high-performing applications that solve complex business challenges.
- Contribute to the delivery of technical features across the wider solution architecture.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
- Collaborate with technical leads on microservices design and end-to-end system integration.
- Apply software engineering best practices, including coding standards, version control, code reviews, and branching strategies.
- Contribute to Test-Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration (CI), and continuous testing practices.
- Work closely with quality engineering teams to support both functional and non-functional testing.
- Troubleshoot issues, support system improvements, and help drive engineering excellence across the team.
What We're Looking For
We're interested in candidates with experience in:
Essential Skills
- Java development
- Spring Boot and microservices architecture
- RESTful API development
- Distributed systems
- Familiarity with AI coding assistants (e.g. GitHub Copilot) to support the build of modular, maintainable service
- Agile/Scrum delivery environments
- Continuous Integration and automated testing practices
- Software engineering best practices, including source control and peer reviews
- Working collaboratively within cross-functional teams
- Contributing to technical discussions and solution design
Nice to Have
- Test-Driven Development (TDD) and/or Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD)
- End-to-end system integration experience
- Continuous testing practices
- Experience contributing to estimation and technical planning activities
- Experience supporting non-functional testing
- Experience working in fast-paced delivery environments
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline
