How I put change in motion

I have joined Accenture for almost two years, and I can still remember the first time I was recognized. It was an AI project which helped client upgrade their whole structure and operation mode. My role was to design the processes and systems, assessing the business model and its possible integration with OCL technology.

 

When I presented the whole plan which was structured using various perspectives and parameters to my project manager, he told me: “Well done! You may proceed". I felt so accomplished – for the first time, I excelled to have completed a deliverable without the project manager’s instruction.

 

As we applied a leading technology in this project, there was no previous hands-on experience we could leverage to let the client realize the effectiveness of this technology and its value at the practical level. I collaborated with cross-function colleagues to run a proof of concept and interpreted these algorithm concepts into beginner-friendly language, helping the client understand its function. During this process, I gained a deeper understanding of this technology, and got a sense of self-realization as well since I successfully helped our client take the approach in which they would benefit and become the next and best versions of themselves.

My advice

Don't be limited by your own aspiration, be open to all possibilities. In the first year, try to explore different projects in different industries, which will help you identify the right path in a later stage.

 

When you do projects, switch your mindset to "If I were the client..." instead of "I think we should...". It is critical that you could put yourself in others’ shoes.

A day in my life

My typical day starts by checking emails when getting up in the morning. Then I arrive at the client's site at 9 am, and have a 15-30min catch-up meeting with stakeholders to update the project’s progress and prioritize tasks in the day.

 

At the junior level, the rest of the day is for PPT/excel deliverables, which helps me get a better understanding of the client and industry trends. As I grow, I can take on more responsibility to drive and input myself into more client-facing tasks such as scheduling meetings in the forenoon and spending the rest of the day on deliverables. Due to COVID-19, I’ve been mostly working from home for the past half year.
