Nature-based carbon removal

At the end of fiscal 2025, our nature-based carbon removal portfolio included projects in the Philippines, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay. Where technically feasible, we are working with our partners to make sure our projects are registered and tracked or certified against relevant standards.

Our nature-based carbon removal projects are designed to support and respect the United Nations Global Compact's (UNGC) universal principles on human rights, labor, environment, anti-corruption and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We have established reporting procedures to help ensure oversight, quality control and alignment with these principles.

In fiscal 2025 we applied carbon removal credits from these projects to address our remaining emissions. We continue to evaluate how best to achieve our SBTi approved 2040 net-zero targets, which prioritize emissions reductions over removals. We will adapt and evolve our strategy as needed between carbon removals and reduction initiatives, including how we engage with suppliers and focusing on sustainable AI and technology solutions that minimize environmental impact for us and our clients.

Our portfolio of projects

Planting bamboo in the Philippines

We are planting native giant bamboo on degraded land to sequester carbon and deliver economic growth. At maturity, approximately 15-20% of the bamboo will be harvested annually and developed into high-quality, fully traceable building materials for international markets. This project will help to diversify incomes, reduce poverty levels and increase local biodiversity.

Reforesting the Mississippi Valley in the United States

Our support restores degraded agricultural lands back to their original forest ecosystem. The project is designed to incentivize landowners to replant and maintain forests, accelerate CO₂ sequestration, improve tree quality and survivability, and establish quality wildlife habitats. Together with partners, this project will have lasting positive impacts which include improvements to soil erosion and water quality and the creation of habitats for migratory birds.

Increasing woodlands in the United Kingdom

We are supporting projects that have converted marginal farmland to permanent woodland in Scotland and England. This is expected to lead to the creation of new and diversified, sustainable forests. Woodlands act as important natural water filters, help prevent floods, serve as essential habitats for wildlife and provide support for employment through sustainably managed and harvested timber.

Sustainably managed forestry in Uruguay

We are supporting sustainably managed forestry in Uruguay (Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified) on land that was degraded grassland from extensive cattle grazing. Creating sustainable forest products helps remove CO₂ and helps to alleviate pressure from native forests where demand for forestry products may otherwise be pushed towards. The project helps to create jobs, improve rural development and to improve soil health and biodiversity.
