How Accenture is helping Achmea stay relevant with a peer-to-peer alarm platform

OVERVIEW

Achmea, which offers a wide range of financial products and services, including home insurance, wanted to explore new, technology-inspired business models for reaching low-income market segments that proved underserved by its current offerings. Achmea started this initiative to stay relevant in the market for home insurance.

Accenture helped the company develop a peer-to-peer alarm platform pilot that allows neighbors, friends, and family to help each other in case of fire or burglary. Due to the significant success of the pilot, the insurer aims to scale the platform to more than 100,000 households over the next three to four years.

THE CHALLENGE

The insurer recognized the need to develop new business models and therefore sought to explore new, technology inspired business models to:

  • Find new revenue streams;
  • Reach an underserved market segment (in this case, low-income households);
  • Bring down the cost of claims and increase revenues within the segment at hand;
  • Fuel its corporate social responsibility program.

HOW ACCENTURE HELPED

Accenture worked with Achmea to build a pilot of a peer-to-peer alarm platform that allows neighbors, friends, and family to help each other in case of fire or burglary. The platform connects innovative home security solutions to messaging apps including WhatsApp.

Accenture helped by:

  • Managing and supporting the core development team;
  • Developing the connection platform, website, and devices;
  • Supplying strategy and digital capabilities;
  • Supporting agile methodology for design, development, and iteration.

THE RESULTS

Improved safety and increased revenue

  • Full peer-to-peer social alerting app deployed;
  • 1,500 neighbors registered in successful pilot;
  • New revenue stream from service fees;
  • Scaling up to over 100,000 households;
