Willie Schoeman is the managing director of Accenture’s Technology practice in South Africa. In this role, he is responsible for all the systems integration, technology consulting, application outsourcing and infrastructure outsourcing work delivered to Accenture clients.
He assumed this role in 2007, and played a key role building the Technology practice into a substantial unit. “I am determined that Accenture’s Technology practice becomes the premier provider of technology solutions in South Africa,” he says.
Under his leadership, the SAP Centre of Excellence has been set up in Centurion, Pretoria. This facility offers off-site application development and maintenance work and employs around 200 people. “The Centre of Excellence allows us to use industrialised processes to develop quality solutions to help clients achieve high performance,” he says.
Willie also played a leading role in the formation and successful launch of Avanade in September 2011, the joint venture company with Microsoft that focuses on developing and implementing solutions on the Microsoft platform. Avanade continues to show strong growth, and works closely with Accenture Technology Solutions.
Apart from a 15-month exploratory stint in motor retail, Willie has been with Accenture since 1992. He says one of the most satisfying projects he’s worked on during his years at Accenture remains the building of the technology systems for South Africa’s electoral commission. “Besides having the opportunity to meet South Africa’s leaders, you can see the effect that our system has had on the country. For example South Africa has the technology capacity to announce election results within 72 hours of the polls closing,” he says proudly.
With an Honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Pretoria, Willie had originally set his mind on a career in the academic world. However he realised that Accenture offered the kinds of challenge he needed. “Accenture provided a management consulting angle that appealed to me,” he says.
Willie is married with two children. He is a keen golfer and says he enjoys playing golf with his kids. He loves the African bushveld and South Africa’s abundant wildlife. He attributes his steady climb to success to his love of working with people at all levels.
