Accenture to host 2nd annual Innovation Conference

Conference to provide radical insights and breakthrough thinking that take business leaders into an innovation-driven future

JOHANNESBURG; Sept. 28, 2016Accenture (NYSE:ACN) will host the 2nd annual Accenture Innovation Conference on October the 12th in Johannesburg, bringing together participants and the world's leading innovators to engage on market-ready concepts and disruptive insights. Themed “Leading in the New,” the conference aims to showcase how innovation can be used to disrupt various industries.

Guest speakers will include Siyabulela Xuza, South Africa's youngest innovator and an energy-engineering Harvard University graduate; J.B Straubel, Tesla Motors co-founder and chief technical officer; and Salim Ismail, CEO of ExO Works and executive director of Singularity University.

“While a single brilliant idea brings with it the power to change the world, it needs the right support to help realise its full potential – that of continuing to transform and electrify the world in which we live while simultaneously turning individuals and companies into innovative legends,” said Ntombi Mhangwani, a director of Integrated Marketing & Communications at Accenture. “The goal of the Accenture Innovation Conference is to do exactly that, exposing industry professionals to radical new insights, breakthrough thinking and disruptive strategies in order to help them take their place in our new, and highly innovative, world.”

The conference will provide participants an opportunity to assess where they are on the innovation spectrum. The use of case studies and an open panel discussion as well as Q&A session will enable participants to share in current thinking relating to innovation, giving them invaluable insight into exactly how innovation can continue transforming their organisations and disrupt their industries.

Speakers biographies

  • Siyabula (Siya) Xuza: Award-winning Energy Engineering Harvard Graduate
Siya is an energy-engineering Harvard University graduate with a passion for harnessing the power of the sun for clean affordable energy. Siya’s love of innovation and the power of technology began at age six when, living in one of South Africa’s townships, he witnessed a helicopter flying in the sky above him, leaving him determined to find out what makes flight possible. After winning a gold medal at the National Science Expo, Siya went on to receive the Dr. Derek Gray Memorial award for the most prestigious project in South Africa. This was followed by the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in the United States, at which he beat competitors from as many as 52 countries to take gold, an achievement that led NASA-affiliated Lincoln Laboratory to name a star after him.

  • Jeffrey Brian (JB) Straubel: Chief Technical Officer, Tesla Motors
As one of the founders of the world’s first electric-car company, JB is responsible for technical evaluation, R&D and the technical diligence review of key partners. A member of the SolarCity Board of Directors, JB also lectures the Energy Storage Integration class as part of the Atmosphere and Energy programme at Stanford University. His presentation ‘Disruptive Technology for Electric Vehicles and the Grid’ will discuss some of the core innovation and disruptive shifts taking place in the transportation and energy industries, together with future implications.

  • Salim Ismail: CEO of EXO Works and Executive Director of Singularity University
Author of the best-selling ‘Exponential Organisations’ – required reading at many of the world’s leading companies—Salim is also a former Yahoo! executive. An innovation and growth consultant, he firmly believes that “if you aren’t disrupting your business or industry, someone else is”. Salim’s leading-edge thinking is invigorating companies the world over, providing insights on exactly how an organisation is able to leverage both technology and strategy in order to grow at least ten times faster than its peers.

“Organisations across all sectors are going through significant transformations, and digital innovation is at the centre of this change,” Mhangwani said. “Our clients want to transform their businesses and the markets they serve while also improve their operational efficiencies and implementing new capabilities. At Accenture, we call this “Leading in the New.”
