JOHANNESBURG; Dec. 4, 2019 – The three-year programme for learners with disability has produced its very first graduands in 2019. Accenture (NYSE:ACN) launched the EmployAbility Cadet Programme in September 2016 in partnership with KLM Empowered, to offer skills training to persons with disabilities and is proud to announce that all 10 learners have been outstandingly successful. The learners received their meritorious achievements today in Johannesburg.

Accenture’s EmployAbility Cadet Programme is designed to create meaningful career opportunities for people with disabilities within the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. Candidates obtained the theoretical grounding as well as on-the-job practical experience required for the 4th Industrial Revolution economy. They now hold the FETC Project Management (NQF4) qualification, advanced National Diploma Project Management (NQF5), as well as a National Certificate in Information Technology Systems Development (NQF5).

"The programme has produced highly skilled and motivated artisans who will now be able to participate meaningfully in the economy and uplift their communities," says Khethiwe Nkuna, Head of Corporate Citizenship and Inclusion and Diversity Lead at Accenture, Africa. "The programme serves as the best vehicle for attracting and retaining people with disabilities into the ICT sector, as well as ensuring that more sustainable career opportunities are generated."

"At Accenture, we welcome people with different capabilities, perspectives, and experiences because we believe that this diversity emanates in novel ideas and approaches to business challenges, a higher level of innovative thinking and more varied tactics that help achieve greater levels of success," says Nkuna.

Disability inclusion is vital for diversity

Inclusion and diversity are cornerstones of Accenture’s global business. As emphasized by Vukani Mngxati, CEO for Accenture in Africa: "With a team of 492,000 people from a variety of cultures, beliefs and backgrounds, we believe that it’s our rich diversity that makes us more successful – more innovative, more competitive, smarter and more creative – and helps us better serve our clients and our communities." Through the EmployAbility Cadet initiative, Accenture has successfully supported disability inclusion in the ICT sector. As Accenture kickstarts the countdown to 50 years of adding value to South Africa, the success of this initiative is highly celebrated.

Government’s Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policy aims to ensure that all South Africans are able to participate meaningfully in the mainstream economy. Accenture fully supports this policy and believes that to build a sustainable economy, the private sector must work together with government to maximise the potential of the country’s people and enterprises. “In the 2018 financial year alone, we spent more than R38 million on skills development for black employees and learners with disabilities. Our goal is to develop leadership and management skills, as well as professional skills associated with specific career paths,” states Mngxati.

Adding meaningful value beyond our bottom line

Accenture has been creating opportunities that impact the lives of South Africans positively for 50 years as champions of business and workplace transformation. "In keeping with Accenture South Africa’s broad impact empowerment approach, we have focused on initiatives that offer the greatest downstream benefits to the country’s previously disadvantaged citizens, the ICT sector, society, and the economy at large. These initiatives include skills development, socio-economic development and preferential procurement programmes."

This year Accenture has once again achieved a Level 1 B-BBEE status and performance. "Our transformation initiatives go beyond B-BBEE compliance, and we are proud to invest in people and causes that make people prosper. The EmployAbility Cadet Programme is one that will continue as we have seen the incredible impact it has produced," concludes Mngxati.
