Call for change

Re-thinking your approach to logistics operations to meet growing demand can transform your company.

And that’s exactly what one global chemical industry manufacturer did to fulfill approximately a million orders around the globe on an annual basis.

As customer expectations continued to evolve, the company’s logistics function faced challenges in the omnichannel marketplace. Its operations were decentralized, generating disconnected data with no visibility or consistency across core processes. With little connection between supply chain and the rest of the business, the siloed approach meant transportation costs were high and the company’s efficiency was compromised.

To become more efficient and strategic in its approach, it needed to overhaul every facet of its logistics function management. Filling a truck to capacity, tracing an order, running simulations to improve operations—all these activities would require data-driven insights.

With Accenture’s support, the company created a five-year plan to revamp its supply chain processes and establish an integrated transportation management system based on an intelligent operating model.

When tech meets human ingenuity

The company reinvented its logistics operations by using SynOps, Accenture’s human+machine platform, to accelerate the journey to a digital, data-driven, intelligent operating model. Using analytics, robotics and human ingenuity, the team was able to set up a centralized control tower that could lower transportation costs while streamlining operations.

By implementing a new, data-driven transport management system that delivered sophisticated analytics, the company generated new insights that paved the road to smoother and more efficient operations.

Specifically, it was also better equipped to monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) while managing carrier and third-party logistics performance. Additionally, data analysis provided full visibility into process execution supported with root cause analysis and scenario simulations to continually improve operational performance.

Built-in intelligence and new data gleaned from analytics were instrumental in making more informed decisions and improving overall productivity. Data mining also helped make better inventory management decisions.

A valuable difference

New data and analytics are offering the company greater visibility into its transportation carrier’s performance, allowing it to benchmark and renegotiate rates. While the company has realized these savings, it has also developed a new culture where transparency is leading to greater insights and improved operations. Having automated processes also help to increase efficiency, allowing the company’s people to focus on higher value work.

An intelligent logistics operating model helps the company move faster and be more responsive to its customers’ needs.

Increased visibility

$93.8 M in savings is expected over the next five years due to greater visibility into the overall logistics function and business as a whole.

Better data

Improved data and analytics give the company’s leaders insights into how and where their deliveries are minimizing costs and saving time.

Automation at scale

Improved automation and robotics speed operations and enhance efficiency.
