Leading UK home improvement retailer: SAP Forecasting and Replenishment solution

Accenture helped a UK home improvement retailer transform its business by implementing an SAP Forecasting and Replenishment solution.

Overview

This leading home improvement and garden center retailer in the United Kingdom worked with Accenture to transform its business with automated forecasting, and replenishment systems and processes to better meet customer expectations.

The retailer sought a reporting system designed to improve its decision-making capabilities. Accenture’s support ranged from providing SAP, industry and business process expertise to handling project and change management. This helped the retailer realize additional revenue and cost savings with improved on-shelf availability.

Opportunity
For more than 10 years, the retailer had been replenishing stock using SAP Material Requirements Planning—a spreadsheet-driven, nonstandardized replenishment process. The retail company sought to migrate from manual processes to an automated solution that would integrate seamlessly with its core legacy systems.

The main challenge was to implement a solution for more than 40,000 products across all categories—at all stores across the country. The retailer selected Accenture to assist with transforming its supply chain forecasting and replenishment processes.

Solution

Accenture teams from the UK, Spain and India collaborated with the retailer to deploy the SAP Forecasting and Replenishment (F&R) application. Accenture provided support in the following areas:

  • Project management, blueprint, design, building, testing and deployment of SAP F&R 5.1.

  • Meeting the technical challenges of linking SAP F&R with the SAP-based legacy system.

Accenture’s Talent and Organization professionals developed:

  • Communication channels for all stores to submit feedback.

  • A comprehensive training suite for all users and held a series of daylong regional briefings to inform the teams about the benefits of the new solution and their role in its successful launch. The retailer’s vendors were also kept informed of the changes with dedicated briefing sessions and advance systems demonstrations.

Results

The retailer is carrying out a structured 12-month rollout across all its product categories. With SAP F&R 5.1, it has become the first retailer in the UK to implement a multilevel forecasting and replenishment system, and the first in the world to link SAP F&R with an advanced, automated reporting system designed to make decision making easier for the user.

The solution helped the retailer:

  • Meet customer expectations by keeping stores fully stocked.

  • Achieve efficient stock replenishment that matches each store’s individual sales patterns and requirements.

This will also help the client realise up to 10 percent reduction in total stock in the first three years after deployment.
