National September 11 Memorial & Museum: enabling education with strong and secure IT

Thanks to its robust and resilient IT infrastructure the National September 11 Memorial & Museum can communicate with the world.

OVERVIEW

The Foundation wanted a comprehensive and secure IT infrastructure that would support the innovative design of the complex, display the collection digitally, and provide mobile tours. By working with Accenture the Foundation has been able to achieve its goals and ensure that the complex functions as a creative educational center.

Client Profile

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center Foundation Inc. has overseen the design and building of the site as a place of remembrance, tribute and ongoing education. Since the full complex opened to the public on May 21 2014, it has attracted 18 million visitors from 175 nations and all 50 US states.

OPPORTUNITY

The Foundation needed IT capabilities that could handle ticketing, telecom and telephony, network management and monitoring, wireless infrastructure, and 3G/4G cellular coverage. The fact that the Museum occupies three floors below ground made the provision of Wi-Fi access for visitors particularly challenging. Accenture was chosen from a competitive bid to manage and install the prestigious project.

Solution

In a little over three years, the Accenture team designed the required IT infrastructure, including an offsite data center for disaster recovery, and successfully grappled with several staffing and weather-related challenges. It also established a cellular distribution antenna system that now supports all four major US cell phone services underground.

RESULTS

The Museum’s key offerings are accessible to all visitors. The quality of the cellular network underground is excellent. And the complex is fully functional as the United States’ principal place of remembrance and education around the terrible events of September 11 2001.
