Enhanced mobility creates a global application delivery organization

Accenture helped enhance mobility to create stronger capabilities and an application delivery organization.

Overview

A multinational energy company faced increasing demand from its business units for mobile applications. This multinational energy company has operations in 30 countries with over 17,000 employees.

The company wanted to use mobility to improve existing business processes and avoid potential security breaches from employee use of non-sanctioned mobile solutions. However, the company needed fundamental capabilities to support current and future mobility initiatives.

Thus, Accenture led a comprehensive assessment of the company’s mobility program.

Using the information compiled from this assessment, Accenture provided an actionable roadmap of activities and projects for the company to lay a foundation for more robust mobility capabilities and also build a global application delivery center.


Opportunity


The company instituted an employee portal called “There should be an app for that,” enabling employee recommendations for improving workplace collaboration and productivity.

The greatest response was the request for mobile work applications. Furthermore, increased demand for mobile applications across business units resulted in the deployment of non-sanctioned mobile solutions.

This occurred without considering the entire enterprise and the risk of potential security breaches. Such factors led the company’s leadership to push for a corporate-wide enterprise mobility program aimed at improving existing business processes and strengthened security.

The company also wanted to establish the foundational capabilities needed to support the fast paced changes in mobility.

It had a number of mobile application proof-of-concepts it wanted to push forward, but lacked a mobility framework to build the applications on.

It also sought to provide company-wide mobile standards and guidelines for its business units.

In establishing its own centralized location of mobile development knowledge, the company sought to have a global application delivery organization, which needed help building a solid foundation to support current and future mobility initiatives.


Solution


Accenture Mobility led an assessment of the company’s current state of mobility based upon a capability framework developed by Accenture. The framework defined eight core capabilities that would allow an enterprise to provide mobility services and solutions to its employees, customers and partners. These core capabilities included: governance, mobile application development, platforms and software, mobile device and application management, security and architecture, network and infrastructure, operations management and support services.

The assessment involved:

  • Interviewing stakeholders, and gathering and analyzing baseline data.

  • Identifying, validating and prioritizing mobility-focused initiatives.

  • Analyzing the company’s existing architecture to provide recommendations for a mobile platform.

Using the information compiled, Accenture and the company agreed upon a future state of mobility with the goal of improving existing business processes and strengthening security. 

To help the company progress toward building out the framework, Accenture provided an actionable roadmap of activities and projects to address any gaps in the company’s existing mobility capabilities. 

The roadmap especially addressed gaps concerning governance, application development lifecycle, communication and platform architecture.

In addition to the onsite team, Accenture also leveraged other subject matters advisors (SMAs) from around the world, including resources from the Accenture Delivery Centers in Korea and India to develop coding standards for the software that would be used to build mobility capabilities (such as HTML5 and iOS).


Results


Accenture successfully collaborated with the client to define a vision for mobility and develop a high-level roadmap aimed at building a foundation for supporting mobility across the organization. This would allow the company to continue on the path toward creating a global application delivery organization that, in turn, would help improve business processes and strengthen security. Additionally, Accenture designed a responsibility assignment (or RACI) matrix for the eventual global application delivery organization. This type of matrix allocates responsibilities for tasks within an organization. The matrix and several Accenture-designed processes will help the global application delivery organization better govern mobility and application development.

Accenture also made a list of recommendations on leading practices for usability, security and high level coding standards that enabled high quality and consistency in mobile application development going forward.

With the engagement’s initial goals achieved, the company took action on several of the activities Accenture recommended.

This included making use of the mobile software development lifecycle process Accenture defined and the establishment of its own mobility standards and guidelines. The company worked with cross-functional teams (such as in legal, securities and human resources) to update its mobility policies. These actions helped:

  • Empower the business to build its own mobile solutions.

  • Provide a seamless user experience.

  • Leverage similar technologies across different solutions to promote reusability for efficiencies.

Following another Accenture recommendation, the company assigned mobility champions to its different business units. This provided the central IT organization with a more direct line of communication to the business units and allowed it to share knowledge and support for mobile solutions in a more efficient manner.

When developing future mobility initiatives, the company is equipped to make use of newfound knowledge from Accenture in the areas of mobile platforms, mobile device management tools, iOS/HTML5 coding guidelines, user interface and user experience guidelines and reference architecture for various platform options.
