ITP: End-to-end implementation of a product lifecycle management solution

Read how Accenture helped ITP to gain altitude and competitive advantage with unified Product Lifecycle Management Solution (PLM) platform.

Overview

Spain-based engine maker ITP is known for its high-quality and environmentally friendly engines. Company leadership challenged its teams to triple production rates, while also improving production traceability and globalization—with no sacrifice of product quality. Accomplishing these goals would require tighter integration of engineering and manufacturing and more advanced product lifecycle management (PLM) capabilities.

ITP selected Accenture to help, recognizing the strength of Accenture’s global PLM network and alliances, and its ability to collaborate throughout the design, pilot and implementation of new PLM processes and solutions. Accenture leveraged the expertise of Accenture Technology Labs, Accenture Strategy and its PLM Center of Excellence, and its alliances with PRION Group (now part of Accenture), Avanade and Siemens.

Opportunity

In 2010 the company decided to refine and align its strategic goals and supporting operations to fuel top and bottom line improvements while better responding to customers’ changing demands. The updated strategy focused on reducing time-to-market of products, maintaining engineering efficiency and optimizing plant productivity, as well as improving product traceability and quality, even as operations became more globalized.

ITP’s 2010-2015 business plan called for tripling production rates, while also improving production traceability and globalization without sacrificing product quality. ITP leaders knew that tighter integration of engineering and manufacturing would be critical to achieving all these goals, and that more advanced product lifecycle management (PLM) capabilities would enable success.

Solution

ITP chose Accenture to collaborate with the company on a PLM transformation initiative. Accenture was selected primarily due to its global PLM network and alliances needed to deliver high quality services and solutions across the globe. In collaborating with ITP to design, pilot and implement new PLM processes and solutions, Accenture leveraged the experience of Accenture Technology Labs, the Strategy practice from Accenture Consulting, the firm’s PLM Center of Excellence (Bengaluru), PRION Group (now part of Accenture), Avanade and Accenture’s ongoing collaboration with Siemens.

The multi-year transformation was led by ITP business and IT leaders, and the project team included experts from Siemens who provided support for its Teamcenter® & NX™ solutions, as well as Accenture PLM process, Data migration and SAP integration professionals. Together, the team embarked on a journey to integrate ITP’s engineering and manufacturing functions, accomplishing this goal in five distinct steps.

  • PLM benchmark: Functional diagnosis and market analysis

  • PLM processes reengineering: End-to-end operating analysis for manufacturing & engineering. Harmonization to create the “to-be” picture

  • PLM manufacturing implementation and SAP integration

  • PLM engineering implementation and SAP integration

  • Data migration from any legacy systems (including Windchill)

Results

Accenture was able to transition ITP from using multiple isolated systems to having an integrated PLM platform across processes and systems in a matter of months. Teamcenter & T4S was up and running in manufacturing within eight months and engineering in 14 months, exceeding ITP’s expectations and original timetable.

The end-to-end PLM transformation is continuing and on track to enable the strategic and operations goals identified. Current successes include:

  • Having greater agility to make design modifications and new product introductions

  • Reducing non-quality costs (scrap and rework)

  • Reducing delivery delays

  • Increasing new sales opportunities by improving the qualification processes

  • Improving engineering capabilities and program management visibility

  • Enabling higher percentages of commonality of parts, which reduces inventory and related costs

Over the next few years, ITP aims to “squeeze the value” of the PLM platform to achieve even higher efficiency levels. Goals include increasing ITP’s ability to reuse Engineering Detail Drawings for manufacturing and engineering BOM, and also refining its ERP system so that it generates a warning when drawings or BOMs are modified in order to reduce the number of modifications.
