HarperCollins: Digital publishing platform

Writing a New Digital Chapter: How HarperCollins Is Creating New Connections with Their Digital Readers

OVERVIEW

The world of publishing is now seeing the same transformational impacts from the digital revolution that have so profoundly reshaped other media and entertainment sectors in recent years.

As digital formats account for a growing proportion of book sales, publishers are looking for ways to market and distribute their titles directly to consumers and create deeper, direct relationships with their readers.

With their new direct to consumer digital platform, HarperCollins—one of the largest trade publishers in the world, is at the forefront of capturing the exciting new possibilities that digital is introducing to publishing.

Opportunity

HarperCollins has a long and illustrious history. They can trace their roots back nearly 200 years and have published celebrated authors ranging from Mark Twain to C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien to Hilary Mantel.

Looking ahead, HarperCollins recognized the growing importance of mastering digital content and the opportunities new channels and formats offer to create new relationships with readers.

Their solution was to create an entirely new, direct-to-consumer (DTC) platform as a major step into the digital future.

Solution

With little experience selling direct to the customer, HarperCollins needed an experienced business partner that could provide the technology and project management required to integrate complex distribution, commerce, and front-end systems to sell digital content globally.

HarperCollins turned to Accenture to work alongside them every step of the way toward digital transformation.

Accenture was responsible for overall project delivery and, with a three month timetable, needed to confirm the work of different vendors coordinated effectively to meet every milestone along the way—and create a single, robust and scalable platform.

Results

With the platform now up and running, HarperCollins has a market leading digital platform for their entire catalogue of approximately 36,000 digital products, available in five currencies and in any territory.

HarperCollins is now able to market their publications and authors online in a completely new way. They can create and launch new websites in a matter of hours to support new titles and launches.

Overall, with the successful launch of their new platform, a publisher with an illustrious past has secured a major milestone in its journey to an equally prosperous digital future.
