Food & beverage company: Transportation remodel lowers cost

Global foods and beverage company worked with Accenture to enhance growth with a transport control tower. Showcase the ground-breaking Supermarket of the Future.

Overview

A global foods and beverage company collaborated with Accenture to centralize its Brazilian transport operations in a transportation control tower. After eight months, centralized operations were up and running without disruption to 1,000-plus daily shipments. Transportation costs shrank by six percent annually. Improved operational visibility has helped make shipment activities, carrier performance and labor more efficient.

OPPORTUNITY

After years of acquisitions, a global food and beverage company wanted to enhance profitability and growth. As part of this initiative, the company asked Accenture to help transform its transportation operations to reap savings and efficiencies.

SOLUTIONS

Accenture and the company centralized transportation processes and systems for a division of its Brazilian operations. They identified potential synergies across business units, headcount reductions and process transformations that yield cost savings. Negotiations reduced carriers from 400 to 100. The team also scaled a transportation system from one facility to the whole operation. Transportation resources and operations were consolidated into a control tower overseeing all transport activities, from dock scheduling to monitoring. The division gained real-time visibility into 40,000 deliveries and 23,000 shipments each month. Alerts flag shipment delays so the tower can get them back on track. Thanks to the initial success, additional divisions joined the control tower.

RESULTS

After eight months, centralized operations were up and running without disruption to approximately 1,000 daily shipments. Transportation costs shrank by six percent annually, with some routes seeing as much as a 30 percent drop.

Real-time operational visibility has helped make shipment activities, carrier performance and labor more efficient.

Executives now have important operational information to improve decision making and planning, and respond more nimbly to changing market needs. Improved carrier monitoring and communication helps proactively monitor issues, boosting customer service. Retailers now have a single point of contact to discuss transportation issues, and consumers benefit from improved shelf availability.
