Apache Energy: Implementing enterprise applications for high performance

Helping Apache Energy with an end-to-end SAP implementation to meet the specific requirements of its Australian operations.

Overview

Global oil and gas company Apache Energy wanted to scale operations in Australia, but had outdated, legacy information systems and limited visibility into key enterprise-wide information.

Accenture helped Apache Energy with an end-to-end SAP implementation to modify and meet the specific requirements of its Australian operations.

Working together, Apache Energy and Accenture completed the SAP initiative in just 11 months.

Apache Energy can now gather accurate, integrated information directly from a single system in real time and have different business functions make timely decisions using the same information.

Apache Energy is a global oil and gas exploration and production company, Headquartered in Houston, Texas. Based in Perth, its Australia operations:

  • Produce 185 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

  • Have more than US$13.5 billion committed to developing projects in Western Australia.

Apache Energy’s Australia operations produce 185 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

Opportunity

Apache Energy wanted to scale operations in Australia, but had outdated, legacy IT systems.

As a result, the company was challenged with limited visibility into key enterprise-wide information, manual and siloed business processes, and an inability to handle projected volume increases.

Apache Energy decided to bring its Australia operations onto the global SAP enterprise system.

Accenture was selected to help due to its proven track record with SAP, including the recent implementation of SAP in Apache Energy’s Argentina operations.

Solution

Accenture helped Apache Energy with an end-to-end SAP implementation. Apache Energy and Accenture worked together to modify and meet the requirements of its Australian oil and gas operations, accommodate more than 90 joint ventures, and migrate existing cash-based accounting to an accrual-based accounting system.

The initiative focused on enhancements to the core SAP system in three key functional areas:

Finance

  • Enhance on-demand reporting, connect reports to integrated SAP information

  • Automate flow of cost information into SAP cost-accounting system

Supply Chain Management

  • Implement a customized material requirements planning (MRP) solution and enhance the SAP logistics solution

Plant Maintenance

  • Merge audit data into SAP for improved management of equipment maintenance

  • Create a new portal to streamline creating and approving work orders

Apache Energy wanted to scale operations in Australia, but had outdated, legacy IT system.

Results

Apache Energy and Accenture completed the SAP initiative, from design to deployment, in just 11 months. Accenture helped Apache deliver the solution on-time and in accordance with the initial one year plan.

With the tailored SAP platform in place, Apache Energy is now able to:

  • Gather accurate, integrated information directly from a single system in real time.

  • Move away from processes managed outside of the IT system, such as spreadsheets.

  • Have different business functions make timely decisions using the same information.

This is a significant improvement over past practices. The integration of maintenance demand information with supply chain processes has helped improve parts availability and stock optimization.

Furthermore, improved access to integrated equipment-related data has helped increase overall plant reliability.

With the tailored SAP platform in place, Apache Energy is seeing solid improvements on several fronts.
