AkzoNobel: Globally standardized SAP implementation

Accenture helps AkzoNobel Polymer Chemicals implement a globally standardized SAP solution en route to high performance.

The world’s largest global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, AkzoNobel has operations in more than 80 countries and more than 57,000 employees. Its polymer chemicals business unit (AkzoNobel Polymer Chemicals), headquartered in Amersfoort, NL, produces organic peroxides, metal alkyls, organometallic specialties and polymer additives.

A lack of globally harmonized processes, region-specific data models, reduced reporting capabilities and relatively high maintenance costs were hindering AkzoNobel in its efforts to achieve high performance. Furthermore, as the company’s existing SAP solution was nearing the end of its lifecycle, it was at risk of being unable to source the level of support it required for the continuation of its operations at an optimal level. AkzoNobel’s aging SAP solution also hindered its ability to rapidly adapt its systems to changing conditions and requirements, such as business structure changes, mergers and acquisitions.

To address these challenges, AkzoNobel made the decision to implement a new global SAP solution built on the latest release of the software. Deep industry and SAP experience, global delivery capabilities and a proven track record made Accenture the natural choice for AkzoNobel to team with on its journey to becoming a high-performance business.

AkzoNobel collaborated closely with Accenture to implement a new SAP solution. This solution incorporated SAP Enterprise Resource Planning Central Component version 6.0, SAP Supply Chain Management version 5.0 and SAP Business Intelligence version 7.0. The Accenture Advanced Enterprise Solution (AAES)—a proven industry-specific solution enabled by leading processes to quickly deliver comprehensive business value—was a key component of the project’s successful implementation.

Leveraging the experienced specialists at Accenture’s center of excellence in Mumbai, India, the project was implemented in a “big bang” approach across three regions and 14 countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia.

The implementation of AkzoNobel’s new SAP solution was completed in only 18 months—a significant achievement for such a large-scale, global project. A sound governance structure with strong project leadership, global business owners and power users helped facilitate ownership of the new SAP solution—for both business and IT stakeholders. Furthermore, this structure was responsible for making certain that local and legislative requirements were incorporated into the “one build” approach.

By teaming with Accenture, AkzoNobel has achieved a simplified and leaner business model. In addition, the company has realized the following benefits:

  • An improved strategic business unit structure

  • Harmonized processes based on industry-leading practices

  • A single data model and adapted data maintenance organization

  • Improved reporting capabilities

  • Leading SAP technology

This solution has reduced maintenance costs and efforts while supporting AkzoNobel’s organic and inorganic business growth targets and creating a firm foundation for it to become a high-performance business.
