HTML5: Path to cross-platform mobile development

A detailed look at HTML5 and its use for cross-platform mobile enterprise development.

Overview

The mobile web is exploding, with users expecting connectivity the same way they expect electricity—anytime, anywhere. For IT, this presents major challenges in areas including data center access, information security, network bandwidth—and application development.

With the standardization of HTML5, developers have a technology that will help them address these challenges as a strategic whole, rather than with piecemeal tactical efforts. But because HTML5 represents a new standard for creating web applications for mobile devices, developers must understand its potential and its pitfalls.

Analysis

This point of view compares the advantages and disadvantages of three categories of mobile applications: native, web and hybrid. Then it shows how HTML5, as a web-specific technology, can mitigate the drawbacks of mobile web applications—by accommodating development efforts across the widest possible spectrum of platforms. The point of view lays out HTML5’s limitations as well. And it offers suggestions for how developers can gain HTML5 expertise and then leverage it to harness the advantages of web technologies while retaining the benefits of native apps.

Recommendations

Even though HTML5 is still in its early stages, and arguably fragmented, it will nonetheless have a broad impact across the industry as it matures. In the short-term, developers should adopt the hybrid app approach, building up their HTML5 expertise. That will help in the long term, over the next two to five years, because most major handset OEMs and platform / OS vendors are committed to HTML5 roadmaps. As more advanced features become available, application developers can leverage their HTML5 expertise to help harness the advantages of web technologies, while at the same time retaining the benefits of native experience, control, and performance.
