Heath Long

Business and Integration Technology Architect, Senior Manager

Chicago, Illinois

"Technology Architects operate in the space between IT and the business. You can exist in either place and feel quite at home."

What I do

Many of the largest businesses and governments on the planet work with Accenture to help them solve their current technical and strategic challenges, or to help them understand the tools they will need to function in tomorrow’s world.

As a Business and Integration Architect, I listen to our customers, challenge them to strike at the root of problems, provide high-level solutions as sketches, drill into detail as ideas evolve and propose solutions. And at the end of all of that, I’m responsible for leading the technical team that will brings it all to life.

Technology Architects operate in the space between IT and the business. The expectation is that you can exist in either place and feel quite at home. This means that on any given day, you can be head down writing code with the developers or in a conference room with the CEO. It’s important to provide leadership to your project team in setting standards and expectations, managing personalities and skillsets, bringing solutions from previous experience and being open to innovation that comes from within the team.

A day in my life

My favorite implementation was on an agri-business engagement, where I learned how to operate the following equipment: a giant semi, a John Deere 670G excavator and a massive John Deere combine. Those are some mighty fine perks, but it was not just for my bucket list. The goal was to create a series of apps that were used in the field via a native iOS interface.

I could honestly talk about cool projects for longer than you are willing to read. I have been lucky enough to work in a diverse set of industries. In my career, I get to literally step into the shoes of my clients—I’ve been a pilot, a lawyer, a nurse, a farmer, a trucker, a chemist, a machinist, a salesperson, a cashier, a food and beverage server, a banker, a field service technician, an architect, a customer service representative, an accountant and a commodities trader. Who gets to do that?

At my core, I’m a family man—it’s where I like to be, whatever the activity. In the summer, I like to get out on the boat with my wife, daughter, friends and family. Other activities might include playing ping pong, basketball, getting some gym time, reading the occasional book, watching unnatural amounts of YouTube, Iowa football and basketball games, going to the occasional concert and taking the occasional family road trip. Last summer, I cleared out about an acre of woods behind my house, but I soon realized that I had just created another yard to mow. So that was a bad idea.

“In this role, I’ve been everything from a pilot to a commodities trader.
Who gets to do that? ”

My advice

Poke your head out into the world beyond your workspace as often as possible. Be curious and empathetic. Take the time to live a day in the life of your customer. I’ve had customers in the field get out of their chair to give me a big hug because I had just made a daily frustration go away.
