How I put change in motion

My work as an Analytics Innovation Analyst on a recent project with Allied Irish Bank (AIB) was an exciting exercise in algorithmic fairness. We examined their machine learning model for unintentional discriminatory behavior toward customers.

 

The intersection of technical work combined with aspects of social, legal and ethical sciences made this such an interesting project. Collaborating with such a diverse group of people, sparking discussions and examining the problem from such individual perspectives made for a very unique learning experience.

 

My team was led by Managing Director Medb Corcoran and included Innovation Lead Billy Delaney, who helped lead the client through the innovation process, and Analytics Lead Laura Alvarez Jubete, who managed the analytics process.

A day in my life

The project I am working on right now is really quite exciting. We’ve just conducted a series of virtual workshops with our client on a qualitative algorithmic fairness assessment. The next phase of this project is to assess the algorithm being developed for any bias toward groups of individuals. It makes you feel responsible, that the work you do is impactful.

My advice

Stay curious and embrace challenges—they represent opportunities for further development. Often, there are no clear-cut answers, and that’s exactly what makes this environment such an exciting and creative space.
