Why It’s the Perfect Time to Choose a Security Career

It’s predicted that by 2019 there will be a global shortage of 2 million cybersecurity professionals 1. If you’ve ever considered a career in security, now is the perfect time to seize the opportunity to protect the world from cyberattacks.

There is a need for passionate, creative people to help tackle the biggest cybersecurity threats facing clients today—people from diverse vantage points to look at the problem from all angles, and people who want to use next-gen technology like biometrics and advanced artificial intelligence to create the future of security.

Make a Real Difference

Whether you’re just beginning your studies or looking for a career change, these tips can help you on your path to a successful security career:

  • Do your homework. Research the cybersecurity industry, stay informed of the latest cyberthreats and understand trends. It’s a great way for you to understand if you’d enjoy a career in this field, while also gaining valuable transferable knowledge.

  • Hear from the experts. Connect with, follow and be inspired by security thought leaders on social media. I recommend several Accenture Security luminaries, such as @jbharvey, @FlorisvandenDoo and @Cyber_Lab_DC to name a few.

  • Get hands-on experience. While company internships are ideal, consider other ways to get experience, such as volunteering to provide security-related tasks for campus projects and local organizations or doing self-study online.

  • Get involved. Participate in cyber challenges, like the National Collegiate Cyber Defense competitions.

  • Promote your work. Highlight relevant cybersecurity coursework, self-study and/or any certifications on your resume and online profile.

  • Emphasize related skills. Showcase a unique school project or work experience on your resume where you used creative and analytical thinking to solve a problem. We look for learning agility and aptitude in our security candidates.

  • Learn a new technology. Think about learning a new emerging technology such as Splunk and Python, which are just two examples.

  • Be creative, eager to learn and passionate. In addition to having a consistent track record of outstanding academic performance, have an innovative mindset, be intellectually curious and have a passion for security.

Start your career path with Accenture Security, and get access to a leading training curriculum, new analyst school, job-specific training, security certification support and access to the brightest minds in security.
