Why My Salesforce Career is a lot Like Golf

I’m one of the lucky ones—I love what I do.

As a technology consultant, specializing in Salesforce cloud-based technology, I’m challenged every day. These challenges are not just technical in nature, they’re cerebral—affecting how I think, present and interact.

If I’m ever presented with a challenge I can’t solve, I know I can ping any one of our nearly 500,000 people across the globe to ask for guidance. And I’ll always receive an open-armed response.

Growing with Salesforce
I began working with Salesforce in February 2000 as an independent consultant. I met the Salesforce team at an expo in Atlanta. After learning about its capabilities, I was hooked.

Much of my passion for Salesforce is not just due to the evergreen approach Salesforce has for its platform, but for Accenture’s leadership position designing, implementing and operating Salesforce solutions.

We work with clients every day, helping them execute digital transformations from legacy systems they have been using, in some cases, more than 40 years. Accenture is a force to be reckoned with in the Salesforce industry. I love playing the roles I do with the talent and clients we serve.

On my first project with Accenture—a service cloud transformation for one of the world’s largest retailers—I had a great experience. The team had very limited Salesforce knowledge and a backlog of more than 700 defects and enhancement requests that needed to be resolved ASAP.

Within just a few short months, the entire backlog was resolved.

Be prepared for absolutely anything
Consulting is a lot like golf; it requires thoughtful, analytical consideration. You need to wake up every day prepared for absolutely anything.

My days are never the same; it depends on the client and the project demands. In some scenarios, I am up at 5 a.m. working with our offshore partners collecting project status, troubleshooting technical challenges or collaborating on a solution for our client. And I spend a lot of my time discussing how we will “design the future of their enterprise” with the client and project teams.

One of my favorite parts of what I do is working beside leaders at the highest levels of “household-name” companies, helping them to discover new ways to innovate and make their business more productive. Nearly 20 years after standing at that booth with the Salesforce team, this is still a surreal sensation for me.

In it together
My career goal is to continue becoming a stronger steward for those that are experienced and those who want to develop experience in a very dynamic and challenging consulting world.

The camaraderie between teams is by far my favorite thing about Accenture.

We’re all in this together. We work in diverse teams, and at the end of the day, we all relate to one another on getting the job done for our clients.

I am a “type-A”, people person, and I love working with others. I enjoy passing along my experiences to help others grow and face their own challenges. I love to travel and learn about history and other cultures.

I like working within the local community to help educate and open windows of vision for kids to help them see that the world has so much to offer and that with a little bit of hard work, determination and focus, they have the opportunity and abilities to experience everything they want.

How to succeed in a Salesforce Career at Accenture
We’re in the people business. We’re storytellers, innovators, hard workers—and we’re human. Be humble, and don’t let your ambitions be your guide. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know, but I will find out.”

Learn. Study. Discipline yourself to become evergreen in learning and becoming dynamic.

Be committed, dedicated and have a “team player” attitude. Push yourself into new challenges and humbly accept them with transparency about your level of skill. Have an attitude that you’ll do whatever it takes to help your team meet its goals.

Often, I will staff someone to a role with no formal experience but the right attitude. This approach is usually successful, and the best part is that it gives me the opportunity to play a pivotal role in helping someone develop an awesome career.

I wish my favorite sports drink had a flavor for that.
