Why I Switched from Banking to Consulting

A career switch from banking to consulting may not seem like a natural flow for some.

But there’s a good reason I made the change.

In my eight-year banking career, I’d held various roles and gained lots of insights into transformation and what drives a bank’s digital agenda.

Accenture became a trusted advisor to my bank. I liked the way they worked and treated their people, but there was more to it than that. At the bank, I felt on the edge of digital transformation, while Accenture consultants were at the very heart of it.

As consultants, they work with the latest methodologies. They come up with the ideas. And they influence the end-to-end process, from strategy to implementation.

Now I’m that person.

Leading the banking industry forward
In my position with Accenture Consulting, I take the digital vision through to execution, helping to lead the banking industry forward.

I strongly believe that innovative technologies, such as predictive analytics, applied AI assets and machine learning bring multiple opportunities for banks to better understand and serve their customers.

That doesn’t simply mean expanding their banking services. It means anticipating the future and helping banks get ready for it.

We do that by conceptualizing products that their customers will need tomorrow. Integrating the channels through which they can access these products. Implementing intelligent systems and processes to support back-end operations.

Strength in diverse perspectives
We manage co-creating sessions with clients and Accenture teams from around the world that offer a diverse mix of skills, experiences and backgrounds. When you combine the strengths of your team members, the insights of your clients and the leading-edge tools and methodologies of Accenture, you can exceed expectations and deliver best-in-class results.

A recent client project involved conceptualizing and implementing a robo-advisor for investment products. We created a new product from scratch that addressed the client’s needs and defined the journey to sign up and maintain the product.

It brought together all Accenture methodologies and practice groups, from Strategy and Technology to design thinking and coding, in countries from Germany to India. In my view, no other consulting firm can bring such a breadth of capabilities to the table.

Curious minds invite innovation
If you’re going to work on a project like this in the banking industry, you’ve got to be curious about technology and what it can do, be willing to challenge yourself and have an interest in financial trends. I encourage my team to free their minds when it comes to tech-driven ideas and design solutions.

Sometimes the most far-fetched ideas can lead to a breakthrough! I exchange ideas and approaches with colleagues all over the world to be prepared for what’s coming next and bring innovation to clients.

I love telling people about consulting and how Accenture has all the tools in place to enable people to grow and become our leaders of the future. Advising students as a lecturer and mentor at the university I graduated from is like an interesting and exciting hobby.

If you’re thinking about making a career transition to consulting, research and contact people at Accenture. Ask what we do and how we do it. Or just pop in to one of our offices for a coffee—we’re very open.

Job postings can only tell you so much; the only way to truly understand the impact of our work is to meet the people who actually do it.

Guide businesses and entire industries into the future. Find your fit with Accenture.
