Just like the use of digital technology in creating a sustainable environment; Cloud computing and sustainability is an emerging trend in our society today. The world today is focusing on the information technology carbon footprint. Organization needs to place more emphasis on developing long-term strategies to reduce their carbon footprint through sustainable operations and products. Cloud computing technology can save a huge amount of energy for an organization in both direct and indirect power cost measures, such as the reduction in the cost of shipping and manufacturing; it helps to reduce the carbon footprint to size using: less machinery, efficient equipment, consolidated climate controls costs, and dynamic allocation of resources. Notwithstanding, the massive energy requirement of server farms of a cloud computing service providers can create an environmental problems. Data centers use 30 billion watts of electricity globally (New York Times, 2012). A survey conducted by Garner also reveals that IT industry is responsible for two percent of the world’s carbon emission, which is equivalent to the greenhouse-gas generation of the aviation industry (Gartner, 2007). Cloud service provider uses energy that is neither clean nor sustainable (Greenpeace, 2012). To be truly environmentally sustainable; cloud service provider must draw their power from a renewable source of energy.
