All of us have a shared responsibility to protect the environment. Many companies are doing their part by making sustainability goals a priority in their operations.
Through innovative solutions, advanced analytics and the power of artificial intelligence (AI), Accenture is working with clients to reach their sustainability goals and vision of a greener planet. And they are achieving significant energy savings, too.
Through our Accenture Energy Management As-a-Service platform, we deliver energy performance improvement for our clients by utilizing energy management experts, extensive market intelligence and proprietary cloud-based technology and analytics.
Analytics and AI are key areas of growth across Accenture Energy Management, and they are exciting places to work within the company. Once you know what’s driving a certain problem or inefficiency for your client, you can take action to overcome the issue, which can then lead to reduced cost, consumption and carbon footprint.
There’s a few things to keep in mind when pursuing a career in energy management or sustainability:
Look for strong brands. Seek connections within organizations that have a large carbon footprint and strong consumer brand. They are typically the first movers when it comes to decarbonizing their business and will prioritize this, creating more career opportunities and ability to make an impact.
Focus on specialization. Look for opportunities in leading consulting companies that specialize in energy management to get a deep understanding of what is driving the industry and from there look to specialize in a specific area such as analytics or renewables.
Have the right mindset. Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm, and have applicable educational experience and interest in energy.
Additionally, there are things we can all do to decrease our individual carbon footprint. Even small changes can have a large impact. Here’s a few to consider:
Think about the amount of plastic you use, and brainstorm ways to reduce it. For example, take a shopping bag with you when shopping or bring a water bottle or coffee mug instead of using disposable cups.
Have a smart meter or clip-ons installed to analyze what is driving your electricity consumption and ways to reduce it. You can’t manage what you can’t measure.
Turn off lights you’re not using and when you leave the room. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED ones.
Make energy efficiency a primary consideration when choosing a new furnace, air conditioning unit, dishwasher, or refrigerator. Products bearing an energy label like A+ in Europe, 5 Stars in India or ENERGY STAR in North America are recognized for having superior efficiency.
Set your thermostat right—not too high or too low. Install a smart model to turn off the heat/air conditioning when you’re not home.
