Using Advanced Analytics to Protect Against Fraud

DOWNLOAD VIDEO TRANSCRIPT [PDF]

Not many people would equate a job in data science and analytics with detective work, but sometimes it can feel that way. We find the “evidence”—or data—behind the scenes and figure out how it all links together.

I really enjoy the problem-solving aspect of analytics and the challenge of finding hidden links within data and making it more consumable or understandable. Technology and data are very much at the heart of our work, and guiding clients on their journey into the New is the most challenging and fun part of the job.

Protecting clients against fraud and risk
As an analytics analyst in the Accenture Fraud, Risk and Compliance practice, I use my coding and analytical skills—including advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI)—to guide clients through their fraud and risk issues, particularly within the anti-money-laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) spaces.

Using data visualization is another fun aspect to the work. For example, working on a project for a large, international retail company, I developed a search-tool solution that allowed them to combat fraudulent returns by querying a live dataset of sales across all their stores.

The client was in the process of upgrading legacy systems to more relevant technology, and our proof of concept allowed them to see what was possible. I also learned the subtle art of presenting data in a way that’s more “consumable” for the client.

My path to Accenture
After graduating from Trinity College Dublin with a B.A. in economics and mathematics, I wanted a career in which I could gain as much experience as possible while using my analytical skills. After researching online and speaking to analysts at careers events, I knew Accenture was the perfect fit for my career goals.

Since joining, I've gained unique experiences from a very diverse set of projects, while receiving both classroom and on-the-job training. Accenture’s environment of challenging experiences and continuous learning provides a platform for self-improvement and rapid career progression.

But the best thing about working at Accenture is the people. I’ve met some extraordinary people—colleagues at all levels who are willing to help and collaborate, to an extent that surprised me.

Advice for the future
The best way to succeed at Accenture is to be yourself and keep asking questions. And always keep learning and upskilling—that knowledge stays with you, no matter where your career takes you.
