Three essential traits of a good strategist: Be curious, be open to taking in different inputs and have the desire to experience and learn new things. I believe that the more you see of the world, the more open-minded you become, enabling you to add greater value in diverse client engagements.
Gaining a global perspective
In my experiences at Accenture Strategy, I’ve been fortunate to work on several engagements abroad. One project for a global travel conglomerate took me to Zurich, Switzerland, and another brought me to Mumbai, India—one of the most multifaceted countries I’ve visited so far.
I also got to spend some time in Luxembourg and was able to catch up with old friends when on an assignment in London. For the annual training at our Strategy College, I’ve also visited Chicago and New York City for a weekend. It’s been fascinating to experience different work environments and cultures at client engagements and Accenture-internal events.
The people of Accenture come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures. I’ve worked with colleagues from many different places, and they’ve helped me better understand the differences in each country’s business world and culture as I’ve prepared for project engagements overseas or work on multicultural teams.
Feeding my passion for travel
I have an insatiable passion for travel, so I’ve found a suitable career at Accenture Strategy. I remember saying after graduating from high school that I wanted to visit every continent before I was 25—and except for Antarctica and South America, I’ve done it!
In addition to traveling on business, I’ve taken advantage of Accenture’s flexible work schedule and taken unpaid vacation time to explore the world. I fit the time in between client engagements, of course, but I’ve seized the possible opportunities!
Last summer, I spent a few weeks in Hawaii, then in autumn I enjoyed two weeks’ hiking in Canada. I rang in the New Year with my parents in Australia, and I’ve recently returned from 10 days in Sri Lanka and a road trip in Southern California. In addition to feeding my passion for travel, I’m continually growing my global perspective by encountering different people and cultures in various settings.
Gaining business and personal insight
We’re always encouraged to bring our true selves to work at Accenture. Traveling has not only given me the chance to meet new people, immerse myself in different cultures and experience diverse influences, but I’ve also had the chance to get to know myself better.
These experiences have undoubtedly benefited my career. Because of them and thanks to the support of my project manager, I was promoted from analyst to consultant after just 14 months—a really proud moment for me. I worked very hard and put the effort in, but not at the expense of my passion for travel.
My experiences also fuel my passion for work. I’m currently involved in a project setting up a “digital factory” for an industrial equipment client. Essentially, the aim is to tap new areas of profitability through innovative Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) products and implement more agile ways of working. As a firm, we’re particularly renowned for our expertise in innovation and enterprise agility, from both a strategic and implementation perspective.
Succeeding in strategy
I’ve worked across a variety of sectors, from financial services to automotive, and the client engagements have been challenging and interesting. If I were to offer advice from my experiences in Accenture Strategy, it would be this: Ask for feedback regularly, be open to what people say and act on it.
It’s been a great three years for me at Accenture Strategy, full of challenging assignments, great people and plenty of travel. If strategy and consulting is where your heart lies, I seriously recommend you explore these and more opportunities at Accenture.
