As part of my MBA course at London Business School, I’ve been fortunate enough – through an internship placement – to experience working at Accenture Strategy. I’d had some experience of the consulting world before, with jobs in Singapore, but the huge global scale of Accenture has opened my eyes to new possibilities within strategy consulting. I’ve learnt a lot from the team and I’m sure that, throughout the course of my career, the following key knowledge and experiences will stay with me.
The Accenture Strategy team’s willingness to go above and beyond when it came to advice really impressed me. My managers and senior managers, and even my managing director, were all happy to go out of their way to not only guide me in my work but also on anything else that may have been of concern to me. They were genuinely keen to make sure that I had a great internship experience and that I was given enough opportunities to thrive in the Accenture environment.
2. Breadth and Depth of Work
I had the opportunity to see the diverse range of sectors and functions that Accenture works in. I was fortunate to work with the team responsible for the digital strategy for a large bank as well as quantify an untapped revenue opportunity in digital marketing for a large FMCG client. It was great to see that the strategy work was data-driven and implementable by the client without just being a deck presented once and then archived for the records. The work we did had a real impact as demonstrated by the fact that the Strategy team was generating recurrent projects from existing clients.
3. Unique Strength
I am convinced that other companies cannot easily replicate the quality and depth of work delivered by Accenture Strategy. Accenture has the complementary mix of tech and business skills to manage the full value chain for digital strategy projects that make the consulting engagement more efficient for the client. The track record of the firm in recent years seems to indicate that Accenture Strategy could be the digital world’s strategy consulting firm to watch.
I am hoping to return to Accenture Strategy in the future, however the strategy consulting skill-set I picked up over the duration of the internship is valuable for any workplace situation that requires problem solving. Things like breaking down big problems into smaller chunks, collaborating with clients to arrive at solutions and having the intellectual curiosity to quickly learn and to continuously master new things are transferable learnings from this internship.
I would highly recommend this Accenture Strategy internship to anyone considering a career in strategy consulting. It’s great to get a first-hand perspective of the actual work being done by the team and the internship program allows you to benefit from that unique opportunity.
