Everything is so much easier when we’re all working toward the same goal.
I was reflecting on this while walking my dog the other day. For such a gigantic global organization like Accenture, successfully working together while working geographically apart can come as quite a surprise. Especially given the sheer volume of projects we undertake all over the world. Yet ours is a culture that embraces difference while recognizing that, collectively, we also do things a certain way. And in joining us, you’re subscribing to the same set of values that bind us all. One global network.
It’s a comforting thought, actually. My main office location is in Finland, but I spent six months working on a project in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates and then another two years in Boston in the United States. Both were incredible learning opportunities; both were very different places. And funnily enough, everything seemed quite familiar, because we still followed pretty much the same methods. The local Arab culture needed some adjusting to, of course. But that in itself was a rewarding experience because it contributed to my deeper understanding of working in an Arab country. We felt united as colleagues both by our differences and by our shared, common values.
My background is in political science, so my number-one driver has always been to try to make the world a little bit better, and to change the way the world works and lives. It’s just another one of those things we all have in common at Accenture. I joined the company in 2000, and I still recall the ad that inspired me. It asked me, dared me, to make our public sector better. Seventeen years later, I’ve never looked back.
My area of expertise is health care, and one of the proudest moments of my career was providing an assessment to determine if a global electronic medical record would fit into the Finnish environment. I saw an opportunity to make a difference by optimizing health care processes, thereby reducing costs and contributing to more affordable and better-quality health care in the country. Since then, I have been working to make this happen.
But I wouldn’t have got to where I am today if it wasn’t for some of the great mentors who’ve inspired me along the way. Indeed, mentorship and career coaching is one of the most important cornerstones of Accenture's culture. It’s yet another way for us to come together in support of one another as we work toward the same goal. There’s a core belief at Accenture that in order to win as a team, we have to succeed as individuals. And as something I’ve benefited from myself, I’m really happy to pay it forward by being a mentor to others, too.
