Seven Predictions on Design and Innovation for 2018

2018 Fjord Trends

Prepare for a world of change next year, as rapid technological advancements uproot the digital and physical experiences of our everyday lives and redefine our relationships with everything around us.

Fjord Trends 2018 describes the ways our organizations, work cultures and experiences—even the jobs we do each day—will transform. It’s up to us to navigate our way through the transformation and seize the opportunity to design the world we’ll be living in.

A bigger, more diverse team than ever collaborated to create the 11th annual report, spearheaded by Fjord, design and innovation from Accenture Interactive. More than 1,000 Fjord team members and, for the first time, 85 clients across five continents brought their individual perspectives, research and insights together to inspire the report.

Get a first look at the report’s seven predictions on design and innovation challenges and opportunities facing organizations, consumers and employees in 2018.

  1. Physical fights back. Digital’s new role: invisible enabler of physical/sensory experiences.

  2. Computers have eyes. For years, computers have been able to read, understand and react to words. Now they can do the same with images.

  3. Slaves to the algorithm. As we become reliant on algorithm-driven services, businesses are challenged to design a marketing strategy to win over the algorithms and mediate a relationship between brands and consumers.

  4. A machine’s search for meaning. The rise of AI and machine learning will require organizations to reimagine the workplace and us to collaborate with the machines as they transform—not eliminate—our roles.

  5. In transparency we trust. In this world of decentralized ownership and tight security, blockchain has the potential to create transparency that will clear the fog of internet ambiguity.

  6. The ethics economy. Consumers are ready to choose brands that align with their core beliefs. Organizations are feeling the pressure to take a stance on hot issues affecting politics and society as a whole.

  7. Design outside the lines. The concept of design has evolved. To continue making an impact, designers also need to evolve how they work, learn and differentiate themselves.
