Rebuilding the Future for the Nation’s Newcomers

Two million. That’s the number of immigrants and refugees who are currently living in the U.S. with technical skills and college degrees from their home countries, but are underemployed—or unable to find work at all. Thankfully, organizations like Accenture and Upwardly Global are dedicated to helping these newcomers build the lives and futures they deserve.

As a first-generation Chinese immigrant, I know firsthand what it’s like to come to the United States in search of a better future. My family faced political persecution under the early Communist regime in China, and my talented grandfather struggled with unemployment for years. I vowed to build a new life for myself in the U.S. and to help other immigrants and refugees—who are just like anyone else, seeking better opportunities for themselves and their children—do the same. Thanks to Accenture, I am able to use my skills in strategy and technology consulting to help Upwardly Global expand and grow. In addition, Accenture supports me and many other volunteers across the company who are contributing to this incredible organization.

As a pro bono project lead and a volunteer for Upwardly Global, I’m working with others at Accenture to make a difference in the lives of refugees and immigrants by providing Upwardly Global with pro bono advisory services and assisting in the job seeker career development through mentorship, resume building and networking sessions. I was honored to represent Accenture and the work of Upwardly Global by sharing my story with a panel at this year’s Concordia Summit, an annual event that brings together more than 2,000 global leaders and decision-makers who are forming partnerships focused on social impact.

Accenture’s partnership with Upwardly Global, which includes building the group’s online job training platform, was recognized with the P3 Impact Audience Choice Award at the Summit. The award spotlights organizations that are dedicated to making a difference in communities around the world.

I am proud to contribute to this work because empowering refugees and immigrants to succeed has a lasting impact. When they are empowered to contribute their skills, companies gain dedicated employees, communities gain leaders—and people regain dignity and hope for the future.

Find your next career opportunity with Accenture, and make a difference in your community and beyond through the work you do every day.
