Some things, like birthdays and the Super Bowl, only come once a year. In one sense, the World Economic Forum’s Annual Conference falls into this category. However, for me, this year’s conference is more than something that happens once a year; instead, because I will be spending the week in snowy Davos with Accenture, it will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Ready: When applying for the Digital Transformation of Industries Internship with Accenture Strategy, I knew the questions I would be tackling would not be easily answered. But this challenge is exactly what drew me to this experience. Accenture’s three-year research partnership with the World Economic Forum had already produced thought-provoking pieces on how technology will change the business world, so the bar was set high. I was thrilled to be asked to join Accenture in this undertaking.
Set: Working in a team of four, we set out to answer the question: How will technology change the workplace? Right off the bat, our research challenged my preconceived notions about the intersection of technology and work. Automation does not spell doomsday. Wages are not necessarily the only measure of workplace satisfaction. And, low-skill workers aren’t necessarily less engaged than their higher-skilled colleagues. Our Accenture team worked with raw data from a variety of sources and even crafted an index by which we could discern how workers across geographies fared as technology has transformed the workplace. Grounded in hard data, the research I helped with was both challenging and enlightening.
Davos: With much of the hard work behind us, I can look forward to the life-changing opportunity to attend the 2017 World Economic Forum’s Annual Conference. Accenture will be presenting the research, bringing my hard work to a rewarding close. Not only will I spend the week getting to know some of the best and brightest at Accenture, but I will also have the opportunity to discuss my findings with other attendees. The opportunity to see the research I contributed to being presented at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Conference — undoubtedly the most important forum for business, economics and government — is incredible, and being part of the Accenture team made it all the more rewarding.
