AI Creates a Window to the World for Senior Citizens

From grocery shopping to fitness tracking and communicating with loved ones, it seems our entire lives can be managed on a screen.

But there is often a “digital divide” for older generations who are magnificent beneficiaries of an AI-powered world.

In fact, that’s what spurred the idea of an Accenture colleague, who wanted to help his grandmother become more independent and stay connected to family and friends.

Using "technology for good" to improve his grandmother’s life just made sense.

Bringing virtual homecare to life
It was during an AI Hackathon where the idea of a voice-automated system first came to life. As a Software Engineer specializing in the development of intelligent apps, I served as one of the developers on the project.

I got hands-on to see and understand the benefits of the product. By visiting people’s homes and installing and testing the AI-homecare device, we came up with new ideas.

Offering independence
It’s no surprise that the product is a huge success.

The virtual homecare app and web portal offers day-to-day assistance for senior citizens in their homes, using voice commands to:

  • get reminders for appointments and taking medication;
  • inform people of their schedule for the day;
  • participate in activities to keep body and mind busy;
  • contact friends and family;
  • find local events to encourage social interaction; and
  • track physical activity.

Using AI and voice-recognition technologies, the system can learn behaviors, so it gets smarter with every use. It also includes a portal that lets family and caregivers check on daily activities, such as whether medications have been taken.

The app also detects abnormalities in behavior. IoT sensors monitor activities and habits like sleeping, movement and eating, alerting caregivers (depending on user-defined permissions) to anything out of the ordinary.

Interested in solving the world’s problems with technology?
For this type of work, you need an understanding of programming languages, such as Java Script—and there’s no shortage of job opportunities with this skill.

Working at Accenture, I’ve not only learned new technical skills, but I also work with experts in a variety of industries where I can really make an impact.

As a social innovator at Accenture, I tackle current issues with technology and we work to make a positive impact on the world.

Do work that’s transforming the way the world lives and works, every day. Find your fit with Accenture.
