“I knew the power of working with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures. But this experience took that understanding to a whole new level.”
I have a background in business administration, and I heard about the Accenture Strategy Global Case Challenge when I was a consulting intern. To me, it seemed like a great opportunity to learn from a leading strategy consulting firm while at the same time solving a challenging case for a nongovernmental organization (NGO).
I thoroughly enjoyed the national round of the competition. It was especially thrilling when our team won the Spanish competition and we were selected for the final in London.
In London, each national team was split up to form a series of international teams with members from Brazil, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain. Working with such a diverse group of people was challenging, but I thought our team worked well together. We were all from such different cultures, so it wasn’t surprising that we each approached problems from different points of view and used different methodologies. It was difficult initially, but once we got used to it, we realized that our diversity actually made our work stronger.
Throughout our three days in London, we enjoyed a wealth of classes and seminars that were designed to help us work together more effectively, improve our presentation skills, think creatively, analyze, brainstorm and get to the heart of complex issues. As I reflect, it was amazing how much we learned and all the new ideas to which we were exposed.
I went to a French school and spent a year as an exchange student in the U.S., so I knew the power of working with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures. This experience took that understanding to a whole new level. It made me realize how powerful diversity can be and the importance of knowing how to get the best out of each person you work with.
The opportunity to work closely with Accenture Strategy was fantastic. I also enjoyed meeting and collaborating with brilliant students from around the world, and the fact that Save the Children will be implementing some of our ideas is really inspiring.
The competition helped me decide that strategy consulting is where I want to begin my professional career, and that Accenture Strategy is the company I want to work for. Ultimately, the Accenture Strategy Global Case Challenge was a great adventure, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone thinking of participating.
