I joined Accenture a little later than most of my colleagues. Coming from an engineering background and being halfway through a PhD program, I was very keen to gain some real-world exposure. Consulting proved to be ideal for that—mixing technical, brain-stimulating challenges with that all-important people element. Many of our technology transformation projects are also huge change management projects. So, it’s been profoundly satisfying to work with clients, helping them understand—and appreciate—new ways of doing things.
In fact, collaborating with people of different disciplines from all over the world has provided me with some of the biggest learnings of my career. Because consulting is a business where we work closely together, there have inevitably been certain differences of opinion. Ours is a culture built on open communication with leaders and peers, as well as an understanding that we are all part of a team assembled to create values for our client. This mindset allows us to always reach an amicable resolution and to move forward with providing the high-quality services we pride ourselves in. It is thanks to the open conversations I’ve had at Accenture that I’ve been able to develop professionally and build the skills I need to be successful.
Right from the start, I was introduced to clients. Thanks to senior leaders who were fully invested in my professional development, I was introduced to and started working with clients directly, starting from day one on my first project at Accenture. And since that day, I was fed a constant stream of opportunity—one of which came to me by e-mail that offered the chance to join a project in Tokyo. All it took was to fill out a form, and before I knew it, I was on my way to Japan to get another incredible learning experience.
One of the best perks and greatest opportunities of being part of a global company is learning and enjoying working with different cultures. All my projects at Accenture, both in the U.S. and while in Japan, have been collaborative efforts with colleagues and clients from around the world. Through both professional and social engagements, I learned how to act as a bridge and integrate global teams from both functional and cultural perspectives to enable higher efficiency and foster friendships that extend beyond just the workplace.
We’re fortunate at Accenture to have a culture that embraces diversity, learning and continuous development. Whether you’re looking to gain international experience or work on a technology that fascinates you, Accenture provides and encourages you in many ways. But it is up to you to prepare yourself for those opportunities and to have the courage to step up to the challenge. You will not only gain valuable functional and technical skills to shape your career, but you will also acquire people skills and find an appreciation for different perspectives along the way.
Find an opportunity with Accenture Consulting, and be part of a workplace culture that encourages you to be you and make a difference.
