My First Exciting Year as an Accenture Consultant

My favorite part about starting a career at Accenture?

Being exposed to tons of challenging, innovative opportunities to do work that’s transforming the world, and feeling supported and empowered.

In just one year with the Accenture Consulting Development Program (CDP), I’ve had the opportunity to:

  • Attend the Digital World conference, which brings Accenture Digital people together from across the globe to learn from each other and tackle some of the world’s greatest problems through innovative digital solutions.

  • Support and lead numerous design-thinking workshops with clients across the financial services, life sciences and hospitality industries.

  • Launch and scale a community to connect my CDP peers to resources, opportunities and people to help grow the digital practice.

  • Facilitate a potential partnership between Accenture and a digital health accelerator.

Our Accenture leadership provides the trust and confidence we need to help us forge our career paths and grow into future leaders.

The most important skills
I’ve always been interested in marketing and branding and was drawn to Accenture Interactive when I joined the company. I’ve learned the technical aspects of the digital marketing tools we use—knowledge I believe is crucial to any role.

In the CDP, we rotate to different client projects and roles within Accenture. Some of the most important skills include the ability to adjust quickly in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment and knowing how to bring the right stakeholders to the table when making strategic decisions.

Currently, I’m on a team that helped launch a new company with an innovative, industry-disrupting product. We created everything from the branding to the user experience to the technical infrastructure. I’ve gained end-to-end project experience, and my favorite part is that it’s similar to working for a startup, but backed by the power and resources of Accenture.

Trust and empowerment
In addition to the work I do for my main client, I support design-thinking workshops with the Accenture Liquid Studios, Boston Innovation Hub or Accenture Ventures with clients across industry verticals.

I also help grow Accenture’s presence in the digital health ecosystem by collaborating with accelerators, incubators and startups in the health and life sciences industries. This typically involves attending conferences and networking events, meeting with potential partners and researching new trends in the industry.

There is a great amount of trust among our Accenture colleagues and leaders that allows us to empower each other to delegate, take on new opportunities and lead deliverables. This confidence and empowerment allows us to take smart risks and innovate, both internally and with our clients.

Live out your passions
Outside of work, I spend my free time exploring the city with my friends and trying new places and restaurants. I’m passionate about skiing and traveling, specifically to the U.K., where most of my extended family lives.

My biggest piece of advice when starting a career is to be yourself and speak up about your passions. As I went through the recruiting process, my strongest interviews were the ones where I dove into my interest areas and the interviewer/recruiter shared ways they could see those passions evolving at their company.

When I interviewed with Accenture, I took the case-study interview in a different direction, focusing on marketing tactics and experience. At the time, I was unsure if it was the “right” approach, but afterwards the interviewer said that I would be great in the marketing space. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this led me down the path to Accenture Interactive. You can read the case workbook for more tips on the case-study interview.

I’m glad I spoke up about my interests. It’s the perfect place for me at Accenture.
