On my first day in the Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) practice, my profile was distributed to my new colleagues. A couple of people reached out to me—they didn’t have to, but they did. And they proved to be great mentors, taking a real interest in my development. It’s been game-changing to have colleagues I can completely trust and be open with.
That experience set the tone for my time at Accenture.
It’s a very collegiate place. You can always find someone with similar interests. People will take the time to explain things, and they will give constructive feedback to help improve your skills. I’ve also benefited from reverse mentoring, being paired with someone more senior of the opposite gender. It’s a great opportunity to talk about both inter-generational and gender differences, which supports our approach to diversity.
Leaders in the business work hard to cultivate an open atmosphere; they truly want to hear what you have to say. No matter how obscure the topic may be, there are networks and subject matter experts you can call upon for advice. And they will make time for you—even meeting for a coffee at the weekend. That’s what we’re like here.
This kind of support inspired me to join a committee that focuses on training and events for analysts. Not only does this allow me to give back and support my peer group, but it also helps me to build my network across Accenture.
I believe so wholeheartedly in the importance of a support network and mentoring for career growth that I’ve taken this passion outside work, and I mentor young people locally. Some, especially those from under-represented groups, have never stepped inside an office. Helping them consider opportunities for their education or career has been tremendously gratifying. The incredibly simple action of just talking with them or taking them around the office doesn’t take much time, but it can transform lives by broadening perspectives and giving confidence. It’s a privilege to be part of something that can impact a person and enrich their experiences.
Before joining Accenture, I was aware of the strong focus on innovation and technology, and I thought: Combining digital with strategy is a powerful offering for clients—something that could future-proof my career. Now that I’m here, I see this every day. We actively leverage the latest technology, gain insight across industries and receive dedicated analytics training for our data-driven approach.
Since joining Accenture, projects have taken me around the world. From Prague to New York, from Moscow to Johannesburg, clients specifically ask for my input. This gives me endless stories and experiences to continue to pass on to my younger mentees.
