Joezel has built her career in technology with Accenture, joining the company right out of college. Her experience gives her unique insight into Accenture Technology’s diversity, people development and support for women in tech.
When did you join Accenture, and why?
I joined fresh out of college, and I knew this was where I would build the foundation for my career. I had offers from other companies, but I felt that with Accenture’s reputation in IT, it would be a great place for me to continue to hone my technical skills.
After nearly a decade with Accenture, what keeps you here?
What I love about Accenture is its passion for continuous improvement and new things to explore. I like working on new technologies and the way technology keeps evolving. Today, I’m an SAP HANA subject-matter expert and development lead. I work with an in-memory computing platform for real-time data analysis to build systems that help our clients improve their business processes and decision-making abilities. Our systems are used by one of the biggest shipping companies in the world, and by thousands of their employees globally.
What’s the work culture like within your team and in Accenture Technology overall?
I work with team members from around the globe: Philippines, France, Pakistan and India. Working with people of diverse nationalities makes me feel connected to the world, but it’s not always easy. We all have different personalities and diverse ways of solving problems. The experience has taught me to be more understanding, humble, to have a broader outlook and to be more confident. And many of the people I work with have become my friends in the process.
I’m also lucky to work where women receive the same opportunities and challenges as men do. After all, women and men can be equally talented and skilled in STEM. As for career support and development, the best piece of advice I’ve received is that it’s not a weakness to ask for help. Mentorship from more experienced people at work helps me learn, and I share my experiences with others who want some guidance.
Do you have any advice for women who are considering a career with Accenture?
Always keep an open mind. Accenture is very diverse, and the digital world is evolving fast. You need to allow yourself to experience new ideas, challenge the thoughts you currently have and accept different perspectives. To keep yourself in or ahead of the game, you must be open to new possibilities.
