Using digital technology to help immigrants and refugees
By: Accenture Recruitment

When Sujan Guruacharya first came to the U.S. from Nepal, he struggled to find work in his field as a television producer. To make ends meet, he took a job in a doughnut shop. Undeterred from pursuing his goal of finding better opportunities, he even updated his resume and handed it to his regular customers in the hope of opening new doors. Eventually, a recruiter introduced him to Upwardly Global, a nonprofit committed to helping immigrants and refugees receive the training they need to begin and advance their careers in the U.S.

Through Upwardly Global and its partnership with Accenture’s Skills to Succeed initiative, Sujan received training, and at a resume workshop, was matched with a volunteer from the Accenture Broadcast team, who told him about an open position. Today, Sujan uses his production and technology skills in his position as a Senior Analyst with Accenture Broadcast, connecting people via webcasts across the globe. He now offers career advice to friends in his mostly immigrant neighborhood, and he hopes to travel and explore the U.S. as his career with Accenture grows. Watch his story.

Accenture helped Upwardly Global build its online job training platform, which equips jobseekers anywhere in the U.S. with acculturation, job search and technical skills. Through the partnership, 4,400 job seekers have accessed online training, and 2,000 of those participants secured a professional position.

Through Skills to Succeed, Accenture people volunteer their time as career mentors to immigrants like Sujan and partner with other organizations around the world to equip jobseekers with job search and technical skills. Sujan’s story is just one of many that reflects Accenture’s dedication to making the world a better place to live and work.
