Just in time for the holidays: AWS re:Invent. We’re makin’ our list after a big year for cloud
By: Chris Wegmann

Just days after America’s families gather to give thanks and fight over the turkey legs, cloud geeks will gather in Las Vegas to close out the technology conference season in style.

This year’s re:Invent, Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) annual cloud computing gathering, takes place November 28-December 2, after what’s usually the biggest shopping day on the calendar (Black Friday, incidentally, led to the launch of AWS).

The timing feels appropriate, because as an industry, we’ve got much to be thankful for, much to celebrate, and much to look forward to.

We’ve experienced another year of massive growth for the cloud in general. AWS, Amazon, Inc.’s cloud business, is on pace to generate nearly $13 billion in revenue in 2016 and is posting growth in excess of 50 percent.

Feeling Secure, Embracing Agility

In the nearly 14 months since re:Invent 2015, I’ve witnessed most of the trepidation over the public cloud’s perceived risks, such as security, fade away. Enterprises now believe that the cloud is secure enough, and they’re embracing the agility and as-a-service benefits that the cloud offers.

In 2015, a Capital One executive took the stage with AWS CEO Andy Jassy and talked about the bank’s then cutting-edge “all-in” public cloud strategy. Since then many other large financial institutions have shifted from an “absolutely not” public cloud posture to something more like, “bring it on.”

I expect we’ll see the next set of leaders from unexpected industries join Andy on stage to talk about their journey to AWS. Will it be health care, utilities… which industry will be next to belly up to AWS?

I believe this year’s re:Invent will set another attendance record with about 30,000 people, topping last year’s 20,000.

Accenture is setting its own AWS records. We’ll have a team of over 300 cloud professionals meeting with enterprise clients at the show. Compare this to the first re:Invent, in 2012. Our  Accenture team of 20 held our kick-off meeting seated around a single table and we met with just a few enterprise clients who were considering AWS. It’s exciting how quickly things have changed.

So Much to Learn

So, the growth is obvious, as are the reasons for being at re:Invent. But you need to do more than just show up. Accenture, a re:Invent Diamond sponsor, has a full schedule of informative sessions and demos scheduled throughout the week that I encourage everyone to attend. I’m particularly excited about our sessions on Accenture’s DevOps platform, and serverless architecture and microservices (you can see our full schedule below)

Of course, the end of any year is occasion not just to look back, but to look forward. We will quickly be looking forward to the release of more AWS features and counting down the days until we can start using them.

That’s why we want your input, whether you’re a client, a partner or just want to know more about how AWS works and what Accenture and are clients are building.

Stop by the Accenture booth (No. 829), grab one us by the elbow, pull us aside and fire away with questions. We love talking about this stuff, and I’m confident we can offer a unique point of view or walk you through any given aspect of public cloud.  That’s why we’re there.

See you in Vegas (after I’ve eaten all turkey that I can get my hands on)!
