Chicken Soup at Work, Every Day

Whenever anyone asks me what I love about working at Accenture, the first thing that always comes to mind is the people. We have a reputation for working hard, but what often comes as a surprise to many is the supportive culture we have here. The overwhelming kindness that I’ve experienced is truly remarkable. Making real friends at work is quite unusual, but at Accenture, it’s the norm. Colleagues become friends quite easily, turning a job into something much more personal.

I experienced this culture firsthand when my son fell ill, in what has really become one of the defining moments of my career. I needed to take a month off to care for him, and I was never once made to feel like this was an issue. I couldn’t believe how supportive everybody was. But the moment that stopped me in my tracks was when one of the managing directors made chicken soup and brought it to the hospital. It was delicious. And the kindness of the gesture blew me away. I expected nothing, but I came out of the situation feeling like I had another family.

We strive for a truly human workplace culture at Accenture, and I think my experience illustrates perfectly what that means. It’s a culture where you have the complete freedom to ask for what you need. Where everyone, right up to top leadership, recognizes you and sees you for what you are: an individual human being, with a life that sometimes needs tending to. And it never feels awkward, because we’re more than just colleagues.

That chicken soup might have been good on the day my son was in the hospital, but believe it or not, I still feel its effects every day I come to work.

If you want to know what I mean, why not try making chicken soup for yourself? (Chinese chicken soup is really quite simple.)

  • Just heat some oil in a large pot, adding turmeric, ginger and some chili paste, and cook for 1-2 minutes.

  • Then add a liter of chicken stock along with some cooked chicken breast, celery and soy sauce.

  • Bring it to a boil, add your favorite noodles, and cook for another three minutes.

  • Finally, stir in a bit of lettuce, remove from the heat, and it’s ready to serve. Don’t forget to garnish it with some spring onions (I’m not a fan, but I’ve heard it really makes it sing).

Or you could also just work for us. If you ask politely, I’m sure somebody will make chicken soup for you.
